Why This Role Matters The Washington Post Opinions section is seeking a designer who will produce and commission compelling visuals, illustrations, photos and packages for online and print. This role works closely with editors, columnists and the rest of the visual team to elevate storytelling across digital, print and social platforms. The role will involve identifying the right visual treatments for columns, editorials and guest op-eds in production. Regular duties include art directing editorial illustrations for individual stories and series; putting together conceptual illustrations and photo-illustrations, particularly on deadline; and designing and laying out print pages, including on deadline. The role will involve working evenings and weekends. This position can either be based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom or on the West Coast or in the Mountain Time Zone to accommodate later hours. How You'll Support The Mission Produce and commission engaging, concept-driven illustrations for op-eds, columns, and editorial board content. Design visual presentations and packages that enhance Opinion stories across digital, mobile, print, newsletter, and social platforms. Design clear, accessible print pages and packages conforming to standard templates, as well as special treatments for longer essays and projects. Collaborate with editors and writers to identify visual opportunities and refine presentation. Support the team with photo-editing tasks as needed. The Skills and Experience You Bring A portfolio demonstrating strong design thinking, originality, and a refined aesthetic. Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally and communicate visual ideas effectively. Experience meeting deadlines in a fast-paced editorial environment. Proficiency with design tools including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Understanding of visual storytelling for digital and mobile-first platforms. Collaboration makes us stronger. The salary range for this position is: $85,100 - $127,700 Annual The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
