Location:

1954 Commerce Street Dallas, TX 75201. : Research topics pertinent to local government coverage. Interview official and testimonial news sources. Submit data and document requests to obtain public information. Write daily and breaking news stories while working on a long-term enterprise story list. Maintain a long-term news planning budget. Develop new sources with authority and knowledge for the stories assigned. Coordinate coverage and assignments with the Local Government News editor and also with other departments (photo, audience, research, etc.). Apply Search Engine Optimization (SEO) digital publication best practices on news packages and stories. Write budget lines and news stories in professional English while using AP style and adapting The Dallas Morning News publication style. When required, prepare and incorporate photos, graphics and multimedia elements into digital news packages and provide the highest standards of news judgment in selecting coverage topics and promoting news content on dallasnews.com and social media platforms. May telecommute from home 2 days a week.

Job Requirements:

Bachelors or foreign equivalent degree in Journalism or in a related field and 6 months of experience in the job offered or in Journalism or a related occupation.

Special Requirements:

Position requires experience in: 1. Writing clear, accurate, and compelling news articles under tight deadlines; 2. A portfolio of published stories, including those covering government, public policy, or community issues; 3. Breaking down complex governmental processes into accessible content for a general audience; 4. Identifying and pursuing investigative stories related to local government, such as public spending, policy decisions, or political campaigns; 5. Obtaining and analyzing public records using FOIA requests or local open records laws; 6. Building relationships with local sources, including government officials, community leaders, and residents; 7. Using digital tools to create interactive content such as maps, charts, or timelines to accompany local government stories; 8. Working with datasets, such as budgets or election results, to uncover trends and develop stories; 9. Commitment to journalistic ethics, including fact-checking, source verification, and balanced reporting; and 10. Applying Search Engine Optimization (SEO) digital publication best practices on news stories. Employment and background checks may be required.
