This position requires strong knowledge of ancient coinage, excellent research skills, close attention to detail, and the ability to assess authenticity, condition, rarity, provenance, and market value. Candidates should have at least three years of hands-on experience collecting, buying, selling, trading, researching, or professionally evaluating ancient coins.
Key Responsibilities:
Identify and attribute ancient coins by civilization, ruler, issuing authority, denomination, mint, date, type, and variety Evaluate authenticity and identify potential counterfeits, modern reproductions, tooling, smoothing, repairs, artificial patination, and other alterations Grade and value ancient coins using current market data, specialized references, and comparable auction results Research legends, iconography, historical context, minting periods, and attribution details Write detailed, accurate, and marketable auction descriptions Evaluate individual coins, bulk groups, dealer inventories, and complete collections Review available provenance and identify potential ownership-history or compliance concerns Organize, photograph, and prepare ancient coins for cataloging and sale Assist senior numismatists with consignments, collection purchases, and auction curation Communicate effectively with customers and consignors regarding ancient coin submissions Stay current on auction results, collector demand, scholarship, market trends, and authenticity concerns Provide occasional assistance with live-stream auctions as needed
Qualifications:
Minimum three years of experience collecting, trading, dealing, researching, or evaluating ancient coins Strong working knowledge of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, or other ancient coinage Ability to accurately research and attribute unfamiliar ancient coins Strong understanding of ancient coin grading, authenticity, rarity, surfaces, style, and market valuation Familiarity with ancient alphabets, legends, dating systems, denominations, and minting practices Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in written descriptions Strong research, organizational, and communication skills Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven auction environment Ability to work collaboratively and take direction from senior staff
