ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
What if your housemates were also your crewmates? That's the idea behind Video Village, a creative residency where filmmakers live together and produce a film and TV slate, starting with the dystopian thriller, Brain Rot OS1. That's right, we're applying the tech startup model to indie filmmaking. Oh, and members don't have to worry about meals or rent, just making movies. Video Village, founded by professor and award-winning filmmaker, Michael Rohrbaugh, aims to build a 'filmmaker tribe' united around two parallel goals. GOAL 1: Many of the world's most successful tech companies were built by small teams living and working closely together. Video Village brings that same model to independent filmmaking. Video Village will serve as part production company / part creative residency, where collaborators can live and work together in a scenic, communal setting. With their meals and lodging provided, residents can focus on working together to produce an ambitious slate of scripted films and shows, starting with the techno-dystopian thriller, Brain Rot OS 1, which has Devil Wears Prada director, David Frankel, attached as an official advisor. This isn't just about making one film. It's about building a resilient pipeline that can support ongoing production, one where the team members receive profit participation and share in the financial upside. GOAL 2: The Video Village Founding Team will kick off their work together by producing and releasing Brain Rot OS 1, the first film in a sci-fi trilogy that explores themes around tech addiction and artificial intelligence. The script was written by Rohrbaugh, who will also direct the films. The first film focuses on a feisty group of tech-addicted twenty-somethings invited to ride out a new pandemic at a young tech mogul's wealthy estate. Soon, they agree to beta test the mogul's new A.I. powered platform, and become guinea pigs in his mad science experiment. Brain Rot will serve as the proving ground and the first project produced inside the Video Village model
  • a live test of the pipeline that will serve as a roadmap for the other projects to follow. The making of Brain Rot isn't separate from the Video Village vision
  • it's the vision in action.
Brain Rot enters pre-production this fall and will likely shoot in the surrounding area. This is more than a job. It's an opportunity to work on a series of film projects, while helping forge a new model of creative communal living.
