Service Purpose of the Role The Shop Service Technician is responsible for efficiently diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining customer and dealership equipment to maximize uptime, ensure quality workmanship, and generate billable labor revenue. This role directly contributes to dealership profitability by converting time into accurate, billable labor hours , while supporting a structured workflow within the Service by the Boxes framework. Key Outcomes (What Success Looks Like) Achieve 85%+ productivity (billable hours vs. available hours) Maintain high efficiency in completing assigned jobs Ensure near-zero unapplied labor hours Produce accurate and complete service documentation Achieve first-time fix accuracy (minimal rework) Maintain consistent quality and safety standards Support department goal of $240,000+ revenue per technician annually Core Responsibilities 1. Diagnostics & Repair Perform accurate diagnostics on compact construction equipment (Kubota and related lines) Complete repairs in a timely and efficient manner Follow OEM procedures, specifications, and best practices Identify root causes—not just symptoms 2. Productivity & Time Management Accurately record all time worked to the correct work order Minimize non-billable and unapplied time Maintain focus and urgency on all assigned jobs Meet or exceed productivity and efficiency expectations 3. Work Order Documentation Document all work performed clearly and thoroughly
Include:
Cause of failure Corrective action Parts used Labor performed Ensure documentation supports billing, warranty claims, and future diagnostics
Understand:
If it's not documented, it doesn't exist 4. Quality of Work Deliver repairs that are complete and correct the first time Minimize comebacks and rework Perform quality checks before releasing equipment Take ownership of workmanship 5. Workflow Discipline (Service by the Boxes) Move work orders efficiently through the process: Assigned → In Progress → Work Completed Notify Service Advisor/Manager immediately when: Job is completed Additional work is needed Delays occur Do not allow work to stall 6. Parts Coordination Communicate clearly with Parts Department on required parts Verify parts availability before beginning work when possible Return unused parts promptly and accurately 7. Safety & Shop Standards Follow all safety procedures and guidelines Maintain clean and organized work area Properly maintain tools and equipment Adhere to dealership and OSHA safety standards 8. Continuous Improvement Stay current with OEM training and certifications (Kubota, CE equipment, etc.) Improve diagnostic and technical skills Seek efficiency improvements in repair processes Standards of Performance Every hour worked is accounted for and assigned No excessive idle or unproductive time No incomplete or vague job notes No repeat failures due to poor workmanship Work is completed with urgency, accuracy, and pride Accountability Daily accountability for time tracking and productivity Direct impact on labor revenue and department performance Performance reviewed based on: Productivity Efficiency Quality of work Documentation accuracy Expected to meet or exceed KPI targets consistently Skills & Qualifications 2+ years experience as a technician (compact construction, ag, or heavy equipment preferred) Strong mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical diagnostic skills Familiarity with Kubota equipment (preferred) Ability to use diagnostic tools and service software Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline Self-motivated with strong work ethic Key Relationships Service Manager / Shop Foreman Service Advisors Parts Department Other Technicians Non-Negotiables Time must be tracked accurately—no exceptions Work must be documented clearly and completely Quality must meet dealership standards every time Safety is mandatory Accountability for performance and results Mountain West Rentals / Mountain West Equipment is an EOE.
