Job Description
The Directional Drill Locator is responsible for operating locating equipment to track and guide the drill head during horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations. This role ensures accurate bore paths and prevents damage to existing underground utilities during the installation of fiber optic conduit and telecommunications infrastructure. The Locator works closely with the Drill Operator and crew to maintain safety, accuracy, and production efficiency. Key Responsibilities Operate electronic locating equipment (Digitrak, Vermeer, Subsite, or similar systems) to track drill head position and depth. Communicate continuously with the Drill Operator to maintain proper bore path alignment and grade. Read and interpret construction prints, bore plans, and utility locates. Verify depth requirements and ensure safe clearance from existing utilities. Perform potholing and visual verification of existing underground utilities. Maintain bore logs and production documentation. Assist with drill setup, teardown, and site preparation as needed. Conduct pre-job safety meetings and adhere to OSHA and company safety standards. Ensure job site is properly restored and cleaned upon completion. Report any underground conflicts, hazards, or safety concerns immediately. Qualifications 1-3 years of experience as a Directional Drill Locator in telecom or utility construction. Experience installing fiber optic conduit preferred. Strong knowledge of underground utility locating and 811 processes. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and bore profiles. Familiarity with tracking systems such as Digitrak or Subsite. Valid driver's license required. CDL preferred but not required. Preferred Experience FTTH (Fiber to the Home) construction projects. Urban and residential bore environments. Experience working around gas, electric, water, and sewer utilities. Knowledge of mud mixing and drilling fluid systems. Skills & Competencies Strong attention to detail and depth accuracy. Excellent communication skills with drill operator and crew. Ability to work in fast-paced outdoor environments. Safety-first mindset. Physically capable of walking long bore paths and working in various weather conditions. Work Environment Field-based position. Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
