Job Description
Director of Engineering - Utility‑
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership & Collaboration Partner with the Senior Director of Construction and Director of Operations & Maintenance to align engineering strategy with long‑term construction and operating goals. Collaborate with Development, M&A, Finance, Risk Management, and Business Analytics teams to evaluate new project opportunities and market potential. Serve as a technical leader and trusted advisor to internal and external stakeholders.
Project Development & Execution Lead engineering efforts for utility‑scale solar projects from concept and early development through testing and commercial operation. Oversee project engineering schedules, deliverables, and budgets across the development pipeline. Review technical studies, drawings, and reports to ensure quality, constructability, and compliance. Proactively identify and resolve engineering challenges in coordination with consultants, contractors, and site managers.
Engineering Management Manage and coordinate civil and electrical design activities, including oversight of third‑party engineering firms. Lead and support the in‑house electrical engineering team. Establish and maintain engineering standards, requirements, and specifications across all projects. Plan, coordinate, and evaluate the work of contractors and engineering staff, and recruit additional engineering talent as needed.
Communication & Stakeholder Management Maintain strong, professional communication with construction teams, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and owners. Translate complex technical issues into actionable insights for non‑technical stakeholders. Ensure alignment between engineering design, construction execution, and operational needs.
Qualifications & ExperienceRequired Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, or related discipline). 5 or more years of engineering experience, with preference for utility‑scale renewable energy projects. Strong technical ability to interpret and review drawings and specifications. Demonstrated experience supporting or leading design‑build construction. Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills. Strong financial acumen with the ability to assess cost and schedule impacts of engineering decisions. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar tools. Collaborative, proactive leader and team player.
Preferred Experience with utility‑scale solar projects in Virginia or the U.S. East Coast. Master's degree in Engineering or Business Administration. Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams. Exposure to projects from early development through operations.
