Job Description

Director of Safety Summary:
The Safety Director is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to the safety team and operations as they support and drive the company's safety activities. This role leads the development, implementation, and execution of workplace safety initiatives in a complex and fast-paced union and non-union environment. In partnership with the Leadership Team, this position helps define and advance the company's overall safety strategy and builds a strong, safety function.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Promote and influence a strong safety culture across the safety team and operations, reinforcing that safety is everyone's responsibility. Develop, implement, and manage company-wide safety programs, policies, and procedures. Establish and maintain safety metrics and report dashboards across the organization. Lead and support Safety Technicians while partnering closely with operations leadership to execute safety initiatives. Review field observation data, incidents reports, identify root cause(s) and contributing factors, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Drive continuous safety improvement by setting annual goals, tracking performance, and reporting results to leadership. Identify opportunities to reduce claim costs and improve EMR. Oversee
OSHA 300
logs across all business units and prepare reports for leadership review. Provide guidance and support to operations, including Branch Managers, Project Managers and Superintendents, regarding job site hazards, training, equipment use, and safe material handling. Ensure compliance with the company's workers' compensation program, partnering with internal teams and external administrators or legal counsel as needed to manage and resolve claims. Conduct periodic job site visits to monitor safety practices and reinforce expectations. Having a field presence while setting an example and modeling best practices is critical for the field teams. Lead, coach, and mentor safety staff and operations teams on safety standards and expectations. Partner with Human Resources and other departments to support company initiatives and goals. Lead development, content, and execute safety training for new hires and existing employees. Travel up to 40%, with potential for more during peak season (April-November).

Safety Technicians Education, Certifications & Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in relevant field, such as safety or industrial hygiene or combination of education and technical experience. 10+ years of progressive safety experience 5 + years of supervisory or management experience 3 + years in a safety leadership role Above average knowledge of MS Office suite Preferred Professional Safety Credential (STS, OHST, ASP,CIH, CSP)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Demonstrated experience working with government regulations and thorough knowledge of federal, state and local government health and safety regulations (OSHA, FMCSA, MUTCD, DOT, etc.) Must have strong problem-solving skills and a desire to create solutions. Maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Must have the ability to work in sensitive and confidential situations. Prior experience working under tight deadlines with changing priorities. Ability to anticipate work needs and follow through with minimum direction. Exceptional organization and time management skills. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from internal or external customers. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently, be self-motivated with a high sense of urgency. Ability to establish and maintain rapport and effective communication with diverse levels within the company and external organizations.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
While performing this role, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear, and use hands. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or reaching may be required. May sit for extended periods; may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Use of office, shop, or fleet-related equipment required. Work environments may include offices, shops, yards, or outdoor job sites with exposure to weather, noise, or vehicle fumes. PPE such as high-visibility vests, safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, and hard hats may be required depending on task or site.
