JOB SUMMARY
The Program Director of Pastoral Care is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and oversight of pastoral care services across the health care system to include community hospitals and long-term care. This role provides system-level leadership for pastoral care programs, ensuring consistent, high-quality spiritual and emotional support aligned with organizational mission, values, and community needs. The Program Director designs and standardizes pastoral care services, supports integration into clinical care environments, and collaborates with hospital leadership, clinical teams, and community partners. This role manages programs and processes and may provide functional oversight of pastoral caregivers, volunteers, and contracted clergy without serving as their direct employer supervisor.JOB FUNCTIONS
Program Leadership and Development Provides system-level leadership for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of pastoral care services across community hospitals. Establishes a standardized pastoral care framework while allowing flexibility to meet unique community, cultural, and faith-based needs. Develops and maintains policies, procedures, and practice guidelines for pastoral care services consistent with organizational standards. Pastoral Care Services Oversight Oversees delivery models for spiritual and emotional care to patients, families, and staff in acute, outpatient, and emergency settings. Ensures pastoral care services are responsive to a wide range of spiritual, cultural, and belief traditions. Supports integration of pastoral care into interdisciplinary clinical teams. Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement Partners with hospital administrators, nursing leadership, physicians, social work, behavioral health, and case management. Serves as a system-level resource for ethical consultations, crisis response, end-of-life care, and staff support initiatives. Build and sustains relationships with community faith leaders and religious organizations. Quality, Standards, and Outcomes Establishes quality indicators and outcome measures for pastoral care services. Monitors program effectiveness, service utilization, and community impact. Leads improvement initiatives to enhance service consistency and patient experience. Education and Training Develops orientation, education, and competency standards for pastoral caregivers and volunteers. Supports continuing education and professional development aligned with healthcare chaplaincy best practices. Promotes awareness of pastoral care services among clinicians and staff. Resource and Program Management Manages program-level resources including service models, contracts, volunteer programs, and educational materials. Participates in program planning and resource justification. Supports mission-based funding initiatives and community partnerships. Compliance and Ethics Ensures pastoral care practices align with organizational policies, patient rights, and privacy standards. Supports ethical standards and professional guidelines for healthcare chaplaincy.QUALIFICATIONS
Education Master's Degree Requires Master of Divinity Degree, Licensed and Ordination and at least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education. Required Licenses and Certifications . . . Work Experience 4-6 years. Minimum of 3 years' progressive experience in pastoral care /healthcare chaplaincy. Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities Experience developing pastoral care programs across multiple sites Strong knowledge of healthcare chaplaincy best practices Ability to lead through influence across multiple hospitals Must be able to demonstrate unique pastoral care knowledge and skills necessary to provide spiritual care to children, adolescents, adults, geriatric patients including grief, bereavement, and crisis intervention Position has general administrative duties.
