Since 1870, Cambridge Center for Adult Education has been dedicated to providing the widest range of high-quality, low-cost learning opportunities for the diverse adults of greater Boston. At a time when digital and virtual experiences have be omnipresent, Cambridge Center for Adult Education (CCAE) remains deeplymitted to place-based, person-to-person, experiential learning. CCAE is a nonprofitanization with an annual operating budget of $2.5 million and a staff of 15 FTEs. We run nearly 2,000 classes over 4 terms, taught by over 200 professionals who are experts in their chosen fields. Job Summary:
The Cambridge Center for Adult Education, located in Harvard Square, is currently seeking a part-time instructor to teach an 8 week "Crash Course in Astronomy" class for adults, beginning in our Summer 2026 term. This class is currently planned for8 Mondays, 7:45-9:15pm. Begins Jul. 13. However, we can reschedule based on your availability. Here is the existing class description but it can be adapted as needed: From exoplanets to exploding stars, and dark energy to the Big Bang, this course offers a front-row seat to the most fascinating phenomena in the universe. You'll learn how astronomers have decoded the secrets of the night sky and explore the mysteries we cannot yet explain. Topics include our solar system, the life cycle of stars,pact objects, galaxies, dark matter, cosmology, and how astronomical instruments work. The course will aim tobine observation withputation: two sessions will be interactive stargazing nights with a portable telescope and binoculars, while hands-onputer simulations will let you model orbital mechanics, predictet trajectories, and explore phenomena like tidal forces and planetary perturbations. The hourly rate begins at $25+/hr,mensurate with experience. Instructors can also take one free class per term (up to $300).
Qualifications:
Demonstrable experience and success in the science & nature sector. Experience as an educator/instructor. An ability to engage a diverse demographic of adult learners. A relevant degree, training, or experience in a science or nature related educational field is preferred.
