Commission Description:
Newton Sewing Studio is hiring a part-time Adult Sewing Instructor to lead small-group classes, private lessons, and project-based sessions for adult learners. Approximately 75% of the role focuses on adults; remaining hours may include occasional coverage for children's classes or camps as needed. This is a W-2 employee position, not an independent-contractor role. We expect approximately 20-30 hours per week, with an immediate start available. Some weekday morning or midday teaching may be available. Regular evening availability through as late as 9:00 p.m. is required. Instructors must also be available Saturdays during the day, with possible Saturday evenings, and Sundays. Paid training is provided on the job. Compensation includes a guaranteed $20/hour base plusmission on individual bookings. Commission varies by program—for example, camps may pay approximately 25%, while introductory classes may pay approximately 15%. Depending on program mix and enrollment, total teachingpensation typically works out to approximately $35-$60/hour.
Qualifications:
We are looking for a patient, adaptable sewist who enjoys helping adults build skills and creative confidence. Strong practical knowledge of domestic sewing machines, basic troubleshooting, fabric handling, and construction techniques. Ability to interpretmercial sewing patterns and explain unfamiliar steps clearly. Confidence teachingplete beginners and supporting students with varied projects and skill levels. A degree or coursework in fashion design, apparel construction, costume design, textiles, or a related field is a significant plus. Equivalent hands-on experience and a strong portfolio will also be considered. Applicants at every career stage are wee, including those building their teaching experience or transitioning from fashion or apparel work. Warm, encouragingmunication and an ability to adapt instruction to different learning styles. Dependability,anization, and willingness to collaborate with other instructors. Ability tomit to approximately 20-30 hours per week, including evenings through as late as 9:00 p.m.; Saturdays during the day, with possible Saturday evenings; and Sundays. Some weekday morning or midday hours may also be available. Willingness to occasionally cover children's classes or seasonal programs as needed. Reliable transportation and residence within approximately 25 minutes of the Newtonville studio. Prior teaching experience is preferred but not required for a strongmunicator with relevant sewing experience.
