An Adult Basic Education or Literacy Instructor works with adults, including young adults who are out of school, to improve literacy and strengthen basic skills in reading, writing and math. Helps students to learn English or gain a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. Assesses students' educational levels, skills and goals, and differentiates instruction as needed for adults at different levels in one class. May focus on basic skills as needed for a particular occupation, or assist students with developing study skills or job search skills, or help students connect with social services.

Job Description

Adult Basic Ed Substitute Teacher Location:
Multiple Locations - Community Education -
ABE Blaine, Columbia Heights, Brooklyn Center Hours:
Varying hours
Modalities:
ABE instruction is offered in various modalities including in-person, online, and hyflex (in-person and online simultaneously)
Duties:
Provide direct instruction to adult students working on basic literacy and numeracy skills. Content will focus on addressing the needs of adult learners in basic reading skills, building vocabulary, fluency, and basic math. Monitor student attendance, complete necessary student record keeping, and provide support for on-site literacy assistants and volunteers as requested. Position will require using cooperative teaching strategies during instruction and integrating technology into learning. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Current MN Teaching License, or ABE license, or Sub License. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to be flexible and function well in a busy environment. Ability to work as a team member. Computer skills required. Must be physically working in the building/onsite.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching within an adult basic education program, experience providing online instruction, and working with diverse populations. Reading instruction experience or training. Training and experience in cooperative learning and curriculum development. Computer experience and comfort with MS Office (Word, Excel), Internet, email, and Google suite.
