An Adult Basic Education or Literacy Instructor works with adults, including young adults who are out of school, to improve literacy and strengthen basic skills in reading, writing and math. Helps students to learn English or gain a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. Assesses students' educational levels, skills and goals, and differentiates instruction as needed for adults at different levels in one class. May focus on basic skills as needed for a particular occupation, or assist students with developing study skills or job search skills, or help students connect with social services.
About Us New Horizons West is located in west El Paso, Texas. We are a branch of the larger NHHSA Centers for Learning franchise. We specialize in providing customized education for a small and exclusive cohort of member students. We cater especially to homeschooling families. The larger NHHSA org has been in operation for over 30 years, but New Horizons West is itself a young enterprise. Each student receives a tailored learning program appropriate to their age, grade, and skill level - but we are always in need of the assistance of devoted, compassionate, and talented individuals to supervise classroom activity, provide content-based instruction and mentoring, and identify learning gaps that need to be addressed. The Job We are seeking a bilingual , entry-level classroom instructor to support our youngest students in grades 1 through 6. Although this is not currently the case, some future students may require instruction in English as a second language. The nature of this instruction will be informal and will not require you to design any formal lesson plans (any formalized curricula deemed necessary will be provided for you). This vital role involves collaborating with our two other on site staff members and the families of your students in order to enhance student learning experiences and address diverse educational needs. Your Responsibilities In the classroom, you will be responsible for supervising and instructing students, setting study goals, reviewing submitted work for compliance with our standards, maintaining a clean classroom, ensuring our regular study schedule is adhered to, monitoring academic progress, identifying students who are falling behind expected completion targets, and identifying maligned study program material (for instance, a textbook-based curriculum that is beyond a given student's capabilities). Our ideal classroom instructor is a well-rounded generalist who will also be asked to lead project-based learning (PBL) activities (these typically involve simple hands-on activities, online quizzes and videos, documentaries, and written exercises). PBL lessons are developed in-house and will be provided for you. Your task will be to familiarize yourself with the material in advance and raise any questions you may have with the Lead Educator, Operations Manager, or, if necessary, the Director (Mr. Arthur Boyer). Upon hiring, you will be on-boarded by our branch manager, Andre Estala, and will be expected to spend the first >2 weeks or so learning the ropes with our Lead Educator, Barbara Chessa (who works with our middle and highschool students). Qualifications At least a Bachelor's degree (in "education" is neither required nor preferred). Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with families and multidisciplinary teams. Keen and critical eye for error, along with a willingness to correct promptly and with compassion. Ability to adhere to the principle of charity of interpretation. Commitment to social-emotional student assessment and close academic scrutiny of students on a case-by-case basis.
