SENIOR LECTURER IN NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND MARINE ENGINEERING

, Mechanical Engineering , to support undergraduate and graduate instruction in mechanical and ocean engineering. Working closely with faculty, the Senior Lecturer will advance rigorous, hands-on learning, applied problem-solving, systems integration, and effective use of digital teaching tools. The position will lead instruction and administration for 2.611, a cornerstone graduate course addressing the selection, integration, and evaluation of power and propulsion systems for surface and subsurface marine vehicles. The Senior Lecturer will also support 2.082, which examines structural mechanics, analysis, and synthesis of ship and offshore structures in harsh marine environments. Responsibilities include leading lectures, recitations, and laboratories; developing and modernizing curricula, design projects, case studies, problem sets, and exams; holding office hours; mentoring students; supporting Canvas and Piazza; coordinating grading; and supervising graduate teaching assistants. The role will also mentor students and advise research in the 2N Naval Construction and Engineering Program, including summer support for year-long design projects. The Senior Lecturer will develop propulsion materials covering diesel engines, gas turbines, advanced nuclear propulsion, power transmission, propellers, and cavitation; guide propulsion-plant tradeoffs and prime-mover matching; and troubleshoot simulation models. Structural instruction will emphasize matrix analysis, plate bending, buckling, and ultimate-strength calculations. The role will lead finite element analysis laboratories and help students apply classification society rules, including ABS requirements, and military standards to structural designs and final evaluations. REQUIRED

: Ph.D. or Master's degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field; demonstrated teaching experience, preferably in a university setting; and strong technical expertise, teaching and communication skills, and a commitment to engaging diverse students effectively across theoretical and applied engineering contexts alike.
