We're looking for someone who loves making art, enjoys working with young people, and can create a classroom where kids feel welcomed, curious, and excited to try new things. Our afterschool program serves elementary and middle school students and gives young people a place to make art, build relationships, explore new materials, and develop their own creative voices. We want our classrooms to feel active and joyful while still having the structure kids need to feel safe and supported. You do not need to be a certain kind of artist or have a perfectly polished teaching style. We're interested in people who are creative, dependable, patient, flexible, and genuinely interested in young people. What You'll Do As an Afterschool Art Teacher, you'll lead a group of students through hands-on art projects and help create a positive environment throughout the afternoon.
You'll:
Plan and teach engaging, age-appropriate art lessons and projects. Introduce students to different artists, materials, techniques, and ways of making. Give students room to experiment and make their own creative choices rather than expecting everyone's work to look the same. Build relationships with students and get to know their personalities, interests, strengths, and needs. Create clear routines and expectations while responding to behavior with patience, consistency, and care. Help students work through conflicts, frustrations, and big emotions when they come up. Work alongside other teachers and program staff to support students throughout the day. Prepare materials before class and help clean and reset the studio afterward. Take care of shared art supplies, tools, and studio spaces. Communicate with the Director of Education and other staff about student needs, concerns, successes, or anything else we should know. Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and occasional program events or showcases. Who We're Looking For You might be a practicing artist, teaching artist, art educator, youth worker, college student, or someone whose experience doesn't fit neatly into one of those categories. We'd especially love someone who: Has experience working with children or teenagers in some capacity. Has experience with art-making and feels comfortable teaching creative projects. Is patient and able to stay grounded when a classroom gets loud, messy, energetic, or unpredictable. Can set boundaries with young people while still being warm and relationship-focused. Is comfortable adapting a lesson when something isn't working. Believes kids deserve to be taken seriously as artists and people. Can work collaboratively and communicate openly with coworkers. Is dependable and understands how important consistency is for young people. Is willing to learn. Experience working with young people who have experienced trauma, behavioral challenges, or other significant stressors is helpful, but we don't expect you to know everything when you arrive. We provide training and support, and we want teachers who are open to learning alongside us. What Teaching at Intersect Looks Like Art is important here, but making a "good" finished product isn't the only goal. Sometimes a successful class means a student learns how to use a new tool. Sometimes it means they spend an hour completely absorbed in a painting. Sometimes it means a student who didn't want to participate eventually sits down and makes one small thing. Sometimes the project you planned works beautifully, and sometimes you change the entire plan halfway through. We want teachers who can make space for all of that. Our goal is to give young people a place where they can be creative, feel known, take risks, make mistakes, and discover what they're capable of. Our building includes artist studios, galleries, ceramics, woodworking, fiber arts, photography/video, culinary arts, dance, and other creative spaces. Our youth programs connect young people with working artists and give them meaningful opportunities to explore different art forms in a supportive community.
