The Secondary Art / Applied Visual Design Teacher provides high-quality instruction that helps students develop artistic skill, creativity, communication, professionalism, and career-ready habits. This position supports a Career and Technical Education-focused model by connecting visual arts instruction to real-world applications, including graphic design, marketing, advertising, digital media, entrepreneurship, education, health sciences, and community-based projects. The teacher is responsible for creating an engaging classroom where students produce meaningful work, build confidence, meet academic expectations, and understand how art and design connect to college, careers, culture, and life after high school.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Teacher Will:
Demonstrate strong knowledge of visual arts, applied design, and approved curriculum. Design lessons that connect art standards to real-world career applications, including business, advertising, education, health sciences, and community service. Integrate project-based learning that allows students to create products, presentations, portfolios, displays, branding materials, visual campaigns, and other authentic work. Support the school's CTE-focused direction by helping students understand how creativity, communication, design, and professionalism apply across career pathways. Differentiate instruction and resources to meet the needs of students with varied academic levels, learning styles, language needs, and career interests. Use student data, formative checks, student work samples, and observation to adjust instruction and support student growth. Build student confidence by maintaining high expectations while providing appropriate support, feedback, and encouragement. Create a classroom culture that promotes responsibility, self-discipline, collaboration, critical thinking, and pride in quality work. Teach and model professional habits, including attendance, punctuality, communication, meeting deadlines, care for materials, workplace behavior, and respectful collaboration. Help students develop portfolios or examples of work that may support future employment, internships, postsecondary programs, or pathway completion. Collaborate with CTE teachers, core academic teachers, support staff, and administration to integrate applied skills across content areas. Support interdisciplinary projects that connect art and design to reading, writing, mathematics, technology, culture, business, and career readiness. Use technology appropriately for instruction, classroom management, digital design, student presentations, and student-created products. Recognize student diversity and create an inclusive learning environment that values student identity, community, culture, and voice. Incorporate knowledge of Diné language, culture, history, and community context when appropriate and respectful. Communicate accurately and professionally with students, families, staff, and community partners. Maintain accurate and complete records, including attendance, grades, student progress, lesson preparation, and required documentation. Prepare for instruction and show written evidence of planning aligned to standards, school goals, and student needs. Manage classroom procedures, materials, tools, equipment, and instructional time effectively. Take precautions to protect equipment, materials, student work, technology, and facilities. Maintain a safe learning environment, especially when using art supplies, tools, technology, or classroom equipment. Support schoolwide expectations related to attendance, academics, attitude, professionalism, and industry readiness. Participate in staff meetings, professional learning, school improvement work, committees, and pathway planning as assigned. Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and training opportunities to improve instructional practice and support the school's CTE direction. Support family engagement, student recruitment, showcases, exhibitions, pathway events, and community presentations as needed. Leave adequate instructional plans and materials for a substitute teacher. Report suspected child abuse and neglect as required by law. Supervise students during classroom activities, field trips, school events, and assigned duties. Serve as a positive role model within the school and community. Comply with all Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, Public Education Department guidelines, and local, state, and federal laws. Support district and school safety expectations. Support and comply with grant, program, pathway, and funding source requirements. Adhere to the New Mexico Code of Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession. Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required. Valid New Mexico teaching license required. Appropriate New Mexico endorsement required for the assigned teaching area. Secondary Art endorsement preferred or required as applicable. CTE, digital media, graphic design, business/marketing, or related experience preferred but not required. Experience working with high school students, at-risk students, alternative school settings, or project-based learning preferred.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The successful candidate should demonstrate: Ability to connect art instruction to real-world careers and applied learning. Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills. Ability to motivate students who may have struggled in traditional school settings. Ability to teach students with significant gaps in academic skills while maintaining high expectations. Knowledge of project-based learning, portfolio development, and performance-based assessment. Ability to use data and student work to adjust instruction. Skill in teaching creativity, communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and professionalism. Ability to collaborate with CTE teachers, academic teachers, support staff, families, and community partners. Ability to support students in developing workplace-ready habits. Ability to use current technology for instruction, design, presentations, and classroom management. Knowledge of Diné language, culture, and history is preferred. Ability to work in a fast-paced school environment and manage multiple responsibilities. Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations. Commitment to the mission, vision, and improvement goals of the district and school.Physical/Job Requirements:
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, driving a vehicle, traveling, writing, typing, word processing, reading, researching information, supervising students, preparing instructional materials, and communicating effectively with students, families, staff, and community members.Safety and Health:
Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions. Completed and cleared background check. Pass a drug test if required for the position. Knowledge of and compliance with district and school safety plans. Ability to safely manage classroom materials, tools, equipment, technology, and student work areas.Equipment/Material Handled:
Multimedia equipment and current instructional technology. Art supplies, classroom materials, digital design tools, student work products, and equipment relevant to job responsibilities. Equipment and materials connected to applied projects, exhibitions, presentations, and pathway-related learning.Work Environment:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Work interruptions are expected. Flexibility is required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Must complete applications, reports, documentation, and assignments within required timeframes. Extended work hours may occasionally be required for school events, student showcases, pathway activities, family engagement, or community presentations.Term of Employment:
