Faculty Position - Grades 7-8 Art Teacher The Potomac School - McLean, VA 22101 Apply Overview Position Type Full Time Education Level 4 Year Degree Category Education Apply Description The Potomac School art department is seeking candidates for a grades 7-8 art teacher vacancy for the 2026-2027 school year. This is a full-time position reporting to the head of the intermediate school and is responsible for teaching five classes of art, as well as advising a group of students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Demonstrate artistic ability and personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, by understanding the knowledge base and developmental characteristics of 7-8th graders. Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials in a manner that inspires independent learning and facilitates active improvisation using various teaching methods. Instruct students in studio methods and with a variety of materials. Teach visual art curriculum, evaluate students' progress, inform parents of progress. Maintain accurate attendance records; manage classroom and discipline procedures to ensure an environment conducive to learning; meet with parents to discuss student progress and concerns. Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and training workshops. Work in an organized, collaborative, dependable, patient, and creative manner. Advise a small group of Intermediate School students by developing meaningful relationships with them and supporting their academic and social-emotional growth. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in art and design or a related field with a minimum of two years' experience teaching. Ability to communicate, motivate and understand students, attending to their educational and emotional needs. Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with other teachers, support staff, parents and members of the community. Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences in students and use different teaching methods that inspire high student achievement. Ability to teach visual art in grades 7-8. Strong direct personal experience in studio arts. Experience teaching in a range of studio art media and methods with an emphasis on drawing, printmaking, painting, and sculpture. Skilled in effective communication.
