Position Summary:
ESL Position
The Upper School Academy is seeking exceptional teachers to join our team who possess a growth mindset, value collaboration and continuous feedback, are passionate about their content, and have an unwavering belief that all students are capable of meeting rigorous academic expectations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Teach, reinforce, and ensure mastery of academic content with ELL students through direct instruction in whole-group, small-group, and individualized settings
- Design and implement standards-aligned lessons using the Massachusetts Frameworks and WIDA standards
- Use formative and summative assessments to measure student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
- Create measurable goals and objectives based on English proficiency evaluations and monitor progress regularly
- Collaborate with general education teachers to modify instruction and classroom environments to support ELLs
- Provide language-based accommodations and modifications to ensure access to content
- Manage student behavior in alignment with school expectations and create an inclusive, engaging learning environment
- Communicate regularly with students' families to promote academic success and language development
- Participate in school-wide functions, professional development, and curriculum planning
- Administer required assessments such as ACCESS for ELLs
- Maintain accurate documentation and compliance with ILPs and state mandates
- Support students with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including newcomers and SLIFE populations
- Complete other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong foundation in second language acquisition theory, linguistics, and ESL instructional strategies
- Familiarity with WIDA standards and Massachusetts ELD benchmarks
- Knowledge of
RETELL/SEI
frameworks and MA obligations
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills with students, families, and colleagues
- Strong data literacy and ability to use data to inform instruction
- Proven capacity to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic school environment
- Demonstrated cultural competence and ability to create inclusive, respectful classroom environments
- Proficiency in educational technologies and digital tools
- Commitment to the mission and values of Lawrence Public Schools
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
- Valid Massachusetts ESL teaching license (PreK-12) preferred
- SEI Endorsement required
- Experience teaching English Language Learners in urban public school settings strongly preferred
- Current authorization to work in the United States
