Job Summary:
Part-Time Hebrew Teacher, Jewish Studies Teacher, Hebrew Specialist Location:
Temple Beth El - Kadima Beth El, Portland, ME Position type: NONEXEMPT, Hourly, Part-time, Academic Year Temple Beth El (TBE) was founded in 1948. Our mission is to be an embracing, supportive, and vibrant community. We observe Conservative Judaism and are committed to perpetuating Jewish values, culture, and tradition. TBE honors the diversity of its members and is committed to their spiritual, intellectual, and religious growth. We are seeking dedicated and knowledgeable part-time Hebrew and Judaica Studies Teachers to join our religious school team. These roles involve teaching students in a warm, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that reflects the values and practices of Conservative Judaism.
Key Responsibilities May Include:
Hebrew Specialist:
Hebrew Language Proficiency:
Possess intermediate (or higher) Hebrew skills, working one-on-one with students to build confidence and skill in student language acquisition.
Targeted Academic Support:
Work one-on-one and in small groups with students who need extra assistance to help them bridge gaps in their Hebrew skills and catch up with their classmates.
Advanced Enrichment:
Design and deliver challenging, engaging lessons for accelerated students to build their excitement and further advance their Hebrew skills.
Hebrew Teachers:
Teach basic to intermediate Hebrew reading skills, including decoding, prayer fluency and translation, and vocabulary.
Judaica Teachers:
Deliver Jewish studies lessons covering topics such as Torah, holidays, mitzvot, Israel, Jewish history, and ethics.
All Teachers:
Foster a positive classroom environment that encourages student participation, curiosity, and spiritual growth and learning. Have experience in classroom management, especially with 10-12 year olds. Develop lesson plans aligned with the curriculum and the synagogue's mission. Communicate effectively with the Education Director, parents, clergy, and other staff to support student progress. Participate in school events, School Minyans, family education, Shabbat programs, and holiday celebrations.
Qualifications:
Experience teaching Hebrew and Jewish studies to children in a religious school setting. Strong classroom management and communication skills. Ability to create an inclusive and respectful learning space for diverse learners. This position typically requires 6-8 hours per week, with classes held on Sunday mornings from 9am-12pm and Wednesdays from 4-6pm with additional hours for; lesson prep time, staff meetings and Shabbat and Holiday programming.
