A Bilingual, ESL, or Language Teacher teaches foreign languages to students in elementary to secondary schools. This includes English as a second language. Common foreign languages which are taught are Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, German, Dutch, Russian, Mandarin, and Arabic.

Position:
Learning In Style School, a school for adult English language learners in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis, is looking for experienced English instructors to join a list of on-call substitute teachers. Teaching shifts are 8:30 - 1:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays. Substitutes may lead classes from pre-literate to high-intermediate level classes (ELP levels 0 - 5/6); classes are at 9:00, 11:00, and 11:15 to 1:15. Lesson plans are provided by the absent teacher. Substitutes will receive $143.75 for a five-hour shift to sub for two classes; or $86.25 for a 3-hour shift to sub for a single class.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
Implement lesson plans and provide high-quality ESL instruction for adult learners. Use a variety of instructional techniques to address the diverse needs and goals of learners. Integrate a variety of strategies to develop students' language acquisition skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking in English - making instructional or programmatic choices to address all four skills. Foster school and classroom environments of inclusivity and dignity, actively participating in organizational and personal inclusivity goals. Communicate with absent instructor via notes and feedback on classes. Take attendance and leave attendance records for instructor. Reset classroom for returning instructor, Maintain privacy of absent staff as well as students.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in ESL, Adult Basic Education, Education or related field, or equivalent experience in working with adult English language learners. Demonstrated understanding of ESL and adult learning; thorough knowledge of effective teaching methods for adult learners. Ability to relate effectively with people of other cultures and varying educational backgrounds; ability to respond effectively to individual and cultural needs, as well as learning styles. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; demonstrated experience communicating well with a variety of populations, including individuals and groups. Openness and ability to modify instruction based on coaching and feedback from peers and supervisor.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification in ESL, TESOL, Adult Basic Education, Education or related field with a minimum of 1 year of experience teaching adult language learners. Previous experience in a non-profit or educational institution focused on Adult Education, refugee services, or immigrant needs. Experience working with immigrant populations.
