All candidates must be eligible to work and live in the U.S. Department Biology - 250100 Working Location (City, State) Boone, NC Position Summary Information Minimum Qualifications MS in Biology or related field; PhD (Biology or related field) or MS (Biology or related field) with EdD preferred Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required) The Department of Biology at Appalachian State University invites applications for a 9-month, non-tenure-track position as Introductory Biology Teaching Professor to start in Fall 2026. This individual will contribute to the continued development of a progressive introductory biology program. License/Certification Required None Required Description of the Department or Unit The Department of Biology at Appalachian State University is a community of 46 faculty who are active in teaching and research, along with a support staff of five technicians and three administrators. We strive to maintain a faculty with diverse research interests, ranging from molecules and cells to communities and landscapes. The department currently has approximately 1000 Biology majors and 60 graduate students. The department provides instruction in biology through classroom and laboratory interactions, undergraduate and graduate laboratory research experiences, seminars, professional development programs, and career advising through courses and faculty interactions. Additional information about the Department of Biology is located on the website at: https://biology.appstate.edu/ Essential Duties and Responsibilities The teaching load is 12 hours per semester and primarily consists of first semester introductory courses for biology majors and non-majors. The opportunity to develop an upper-level course or course-based undergraduate research experience ( CURE) may be possible depending on departmental need and individual expertise. Beyond teaching, specific duties for the position include updating introductory laboratory curricula to reflect best practices in biology education and contributing to program assessment. Other duties may include serving on the Introductory Biology Steering Committee and undergraduate academic advising. Candidate must be eligible to teach in person beginning fall semester 2026. No ABD consideration (see desc. below) ABD Description ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
