Veritas Preparatory Academy Reports to: Academy Athletic Director Seasonal. Winter Sport Season Off-season program activities as assignedPosition Summary:
The Freshman Boys Basketball Head Coach is responsible for leading the Veritas Prep freshman boys basketball team and developing high school student-athletes through sport instruction, positive competition, character formation, and academic accountability. The ideal candidate will be an experienced teacher of the game who can develop student-athletes and lead with consistency, discipline, and enthusiasm while aligning with the JV and varsity program.Responsibilities:
Plan and conduct structured, developmentally appropriate practices that emphasize basketball fundamentals, individual skill development, team offense and defense, transition play, situational decision-making, conditioning, and competitive preparation. Coordinate with the varsity and JV coaches so terminology, expectations, systems, and teaching progressions are aligned across team levels. Establish and communicate clear seasonal goals, team standards, and expectations for athletes and families. Create a positive and disciplined team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship, effort, coachability, teamwork, accountability, and academic responsibility. Provide constructive feedback and individualized instruction to help student-athletes improve their skills, decision-making, confidence, and understanding of the game. Promote student-athlete safety through appropriate instruction, supervision, conditioning, hydration, injury-reporting practices, and adherence to school and governing-body requirements. Lead tryouts, player evaluation, roster decisions, and ongoing athlete development in a fair, organized, and transparent manner. Communicate clearly and consistently with athletes, families, coaches, school personnel, officials, and the Athletic Director regarding schedules, expectations, transportation, and team information. Organize and supervise student-athletes at practices, competitions, meetings, travel, and other program activities. Manage program equipment and uniforms responsibly, including distribution, inventory, care, and return procedures as assigned. Represent Veritas Prep and the program in a professional and positive manner. Uphold the mission, values, and educational philosophy of Veritas Preparatory Academy. Ensure compliance with all relevant school, league, governing-body, facility, and athletic department policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned.Qualifications:
Previous basketball coaching experience is required; high school, club, or collegiate coaching experience is preferred. Strong knowledge of basketball rules, fundamentals, offensive and defensive concepts, practice organization, game management, and age-appropriate player development. Excellent leadership, communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills. Ability to motivate, teach, and mentor high school student-athletes of varying experience levels. Demonstrated commitment to the holistic development of student-athletes, prioritizing character, sportsmanship, academic success, and team commitment. Strong organizational, planning, and time-management skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with coaches, parents, colleagues, school administrators, and athletic department staff.Additional Requirements Type of clearance:
fingerprint clearance and background check. Complete all school, league, and governing-body coaching certifications and required trainings before participation, as applicable.Physical functions:
Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to approximately 50 pounds. Availability for practices, competitions, meetings, travel, and other team activities during the assigned sport season.
