Job Description

Youth Basketball Coach
  • After-School Enrichment (Part-Time) | K-6th Grade | San Diego Rise Basketball is hiring part-time coaches to lead after-school basketball classes for kindergarten through 6th grade on elementary school campuses across San Diego.
We teach the game the right way for young kids: fundamentals, fun, confidence, and sportsmanship. No tryouts, no cuts, every kid plays. You'll teach one or more 60-minute classes per week at a school near you, using Rise's proven curriculum and lesson plans. We provide the equipment, the training, and the structure. You bring the energy.
PAY & SCHEDULE
  • $25-30 per hour, paid for the full class plus setup and check-in time
  • Part-time:
    2-6 hours per week, with room to add classes as we grow
  • Classes run after school, Monday-Friday, approx. 12:30-4:30 PM. Exact day and school assigned before you start
  • Seasonal sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring) plus optional school-break camps with additional paid hours
  • Paid onboarding and training before your first class
  • W-2 employee.
Not a 1099 gig
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Lead 60-minute basketball classes for groups of 5-15 players ages 5-12 (K-2nd and 3rd-6th grade)
  • Teach core skills: dribbling, passing, shooting form, footwork, and basic teamwork
  • Run age-appropriate drills and small-sided games that keep every child moving and engaged
  • Create a positive, inclusive environment where beginners and experienced players both improve
  • Set up and break down equipment, and run student check-in and dismissal with school staff and parents
  • Follow school campus rules and safety procedures
  • Communicate professionally and warmly with parents, school staff, and the Rise team
  • Keep kids safe at all times
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Experience coaching or working with children (youth coach, camp counselor, teacher, aide, tutor, trainer, or college/high school player with kid experience)
  • Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals, and the ability to teach them simply to 5
  • to 12-year-olds
  • High energy, patience, and a sense of humor. Little kids are loud and wiggly, and you enjoy that
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional. On-time arrival is non-negotiable in a school setting
  • Reliable transportation to school sites
  • 18+ years old
  • Able to demonstrate drills and be on your feet for 60+ minutes
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
REQUIRED BEFORE YOUR FIRST CLASS
We work in schools, so all coaches must clear:
  • Live Scan fingerprint background check
  • TB risk assessment/clearance
  • California mandated reporter and child abuse prevention training
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification (or willingness to complete before start) Rise pays for your Live Scan, TB clearance, and required training.
NICE TO HAVE
  • Experience with after-school, camp, or school-day enrichment programs
  • Current or former teacher, instructional aide, or education/kinesiology/child development student
  • Playing experience at the high school, college, or club level
  • Prior coaching experience at the K-6 level
