ABOUT PUZZLE PIECE ATHLETICS
Puzzle Piece Athletics® (PPA) is an adaptive athletics organization dedicated to helping neurodiverse individuals, including those with autism and other developmental disabilities, build strength, confidence, and independence through fitness. Across our Northern California locations, our coaches deliver individualized, one-on-one training that meets each athlete where they are, using structured routines, positive reinforcement, and a genuine celebration of progress at every level. We partner closely with families and caregivers to create an inclusive fitness community where every athlete belongs. Job Summary We are seeking a dynamic and compassionate Coach to empower individuals through personalized guidance, skill development, and support. In this role, you will work closely with clients from diverse backgrounds, including those with developmental disabilities, autism, and underserved communities. Your energy and dedication will foster growth, independence, and confidence in each individual you serve. ROLE SUMMARY
You will deliver one-hour, one-on-one personal training sessions to neurodiverse preteen, teen, and adult athletes in a safe, structured, and encouraging environment. Every session reflects Puzzle Piece Athletics® (PPA) mission and standard of excellence, with the goal of promoting confidence, increasing mobility and strength, and helping each athlete work toward their personal goals. This role combines fitness coaching with behavioral awareness, breaking down movements into achievable steps, adapting on the fly to each athlete's needs, and celebrating progress at every level. It requires patience, energy, and a commitment to creating an inclusive fitness community for individuals with special abilities.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
The following are the essential functions of this position. Coaching & Session Leadership Lead one-hour, one-on-one personal training sessions with preteen, teen, and adult athletes of varying abilities and support needs. Implement and adapt individualized fitness programs in accordance with Puzzle Piece Athletics® Program Design standards and mission of excellence. Break down, modify, and progress exercises based on each athlete's motor skills, strength, mobility, and behavioral needs. Use positive reinforcement and structured routines to reduce maladaptive behaviors and increase on-task engagement. Athlete Progress & Family Communication Track athlete progress, document session notes, and communicate updates to families/caregivers and the Head Trainer. Build rapport and trust with athletes and their families, maintaining professional and compassionate communication. Help athletes set goals and celebrate milestones to build confidence and lasting healthy habits. Safety & Environment Maintain a clean, safe, and organized training environment; inspect equipment and report any safety concerns. Deliver sessions in accordance with Puzzle Piece Athletics® Program Design standards; complete Special Incident Reports promptly and accurately whenever required. Team & Community Participate in team meetings, ongoing training, and professional development. Represent Puzzle Piece Athletics® inclusive mission within the facility and the broader community. Perform other related duties as assigned. Schedule Sessions are generally held between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., seven days a week, by appointment based on staff and participant availability. Your individual schedule will be set by your manager and may vary based on session demand.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Experience working with neurodivergent individuals (e.g., ABA/RBT experience, special education, adaptive PE, therapeutic recreation) OR demonstrated fitness coaching experience with willingness to learn adaptive methods. Working knowledge of neurodiversity-informed coaching practices and positive behavior support strategies, and the ability to adapt communication and instruction style to each athlete's individual needs.
Strong interpersonal skills:
patience, empathy, clear communication, and adaptability. Ability to demonstrate and physically assist with exercise movements. Preferred (not required): Degree or coursework in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Special Education, Psychology, or a related field. Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification or ABA experience. Personal training or coaching certification (NASM, ACE, ISSA, CSCS, CrossFit CF-L1/CrossFit Kids, or equivalent). Experience in youth sports, adaptive athletics, or group fitness instruction.
REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent. CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire). Completion of all legally required trainings for a non-supervisory position (e.g., harassment prevention, workplace safety), in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local law, within required timeframes. Successful completion of a background check, including Live Scan fingerprinting as required by California law for roles with participant contact.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and move continuously throughout sessions. Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs (equipment set up, spotting, physical assistance). Ability to physically demonstrate exercises and respond quickly to safety situations.
