Seasonal (Spring Sports Season and Off-Season Responsibilities as Assigned) About Us Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy is a tuition-free public charter school authorized by District 49, proudly serving the Banning Lewis Ranch community and surrounding neighborhoods in northeastern Colorado Springs since 2006. Our mission is to create a safe, supportive environment where students thrive academically and develop the skills, character, and mindset to engage with the world. Position Overview The Assistant High School Track & Field Coach supports the Head Coach in all aspects of developing and maintaining a competitive and student-centered track and field program aligned with the mission and values of Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy. This role includes assisting with event-specific coaching, practice planning, athlete development, meet supervision, and supporting a positive team culture focused on discipline, growth, and performance. Key Competencies Strong teamwork and collaboration skills Knowledge of track and field events, techniques, and training principles Ability to coach and develop athletes across various disciplines Strong communication and organizational abilities Commitment to professionalism, integrity, and sportsmanship Ability to motivate and mentor high school student-athletes Strong observational and instructional skills Ability to remain calm and effective in competitive environments Core Responsibilities Program Support and Athlete Development Assist the Head Coach in all aspects of the high school track and field program Support planning and execution of structured, event-specific practices Provide technical instruction in running, jumping, and throwing events Assist with strength, speed, endurance, and injury prevention training Offer feedback and mentorship to support athlete development and performance Help foster accountability, discipline, teamwork, and positive team culture Meet and Competition Support Assist with coaching and supervision during all track meets and competitions Support athlete preparation, event assignments, and warm-up routines Provide in-meet feedback and technical adjustments as needed Ensure athletes are safe, prepared, and supported throughout competition Model professionalism and sportsmanship at all events Student-Athlete Support Encourage academic success and positive citizenship among athletes Assist in monitoring eligibility, attendance, and behavioral expectations Build positive relationships with student-athletes while maintaining standards Promote leadership, resilience, teamwork, and personal growth Support athlete safety and well-being during all practices, meets, and travel Communication and Family Engagement Maintain professional communication with athletes, families, coaching staff, and administration Assist in sharing practice schedules, meet information, and program updates Address concerns through appropriate coaching channels Represent the school and athletic program positively in the community Operations and Program Assistance Assist with setup, organization, and care of track and field equipment Support safe and efficient use of facilities and event areas Help coordinate meet logistics, athlete entries, and event supervision Attend required meetings, trainings, and athletic department events Support the Head Coach and Athletic Director with additional program needs as assigned Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations Criminal background check required for hire Valid Colorado driver's license preferred CPR and First Aid certification required Completion of all CHSAA-required coaching certifications and trainings Concussion training certification required Other Work Factors Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to run, walk, demonstrate athletic movements, bend, crouch, and communicate. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Work includes regular outdoor activity in varying weather conditions. Work Environment Work is primarily performed on outdoor track and field facilities, with occasional indoor meetings and travel for competitions. Mental Functions The employee is regularly required to communicate, instruct, analyze performance, coordinate athlete groups, evaluate technique, problem solve, and collaborate effectively with coaching staff. Required Qualifications High school diploma required; bachelor's degree preferred Previous coaching or competitive experience in track and field, cross country, or related sport preferred Ability to pass a background check (required) Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire Strong knowledge of track and field events, training principles, and athlete development Ability to safely instruct and supervise student-athletes across multiple event groups Strong communication and relationship-building skills Commitment to sportsmanship, character development, and student-athlete success Ability to work collaboratively within a larger coaching staff structure Must meet CHSAA and school coaching requirements Why Join Us?
