Commensurate with experience; certifications required About Swimmons Academy Swimmons Academy is a structured swim program operating out of the Boys & Girls Club of Ridgefield•Danbury. Our program serves youth swimmers across four progressive skill tiers—Minnows, Bronze, Silver, and Gold—with a curriculum built around safety, skill mastery, and swimmer confidence. Classes are capped at five swimmers per instructor to ensure individualized attention and proper safety ratios. Position Summary The Swim Instructor is responsible for delivering safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate swim instruction to youth swimmers within their assigned division. Instructors follow the Swimmons Academy 30-minute lesson framework and YMCA Swim Lessons curriculum, guiding swimmers through level-specific benchmarks and exit criteria. This role requires equal parts technical swim knowledge, child development awareness, and genuine enthusiasm for helping young people build water confidence. Key Responsibilities Instruction & Curriculum Deliver 30-minute lessons structured around the Swimmons Academy lesson flow: Welcome & Safety, Warm-Up, Core Skill Work, Challenge/Application, and Sliding Review & Close Use approved progressions, drills, and activities from the Swimmons Academy Skill Library for each level Apply the Sliding Review Protocol (Look Back → Lock In → Look Ahead → Positive Close) at the end of every lesson without exception Never introduce new skills or end a lesson on a correction Swimmer Progress & Assessment Track individual swimmer progress against level benchmarks and exit criteria each session Document attendance and skill ratings accurately using the program's tracking system Identify swimmers ready for advancement and communicate findings to the Aquatics Director Provide constructive, age-appropriate feedback during lessons and flag concerns promptly Safety & Compliance Maintain a safe pool environment at all times and enforce pool rules consistently Confirm minimum safety staffing is in place before every lesson—no lesson begins without a Lifeguard on Stand and an Assistant Lifeguard assigned to the group Never perform instructional duties while serving as the Lifeguard on Stand—these roles may never be combined Respond promptly and appropriately to any emergency; be familiar with the facility Emergency Action Plan Ensure swimmers enter and exit the water only with instructor permission Communication & Professionalism Arrive at least 10 minutes before each scheduled class and be pool-deck ready at lesson start time Communicate openly with the Aquatics Director regarding lesson delivery, swimmer progress, and any concerns Maintain a professional, encouraging, and patient demeanor with swimmers and families at all times Participate in pre-session orientation and any required in-service training Required Qualifications Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification (or equivalent), including CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid Current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification, or equivalent recognized credential Demonstrated ability to swim proficiently using multiple strokes Experience working with children in a structured, supervised setting Strong communication skills and ability to give clear, age-appropriate instruction Dependability and commitment to scheduled lesson times throughout the session Preferred Qualifications Prior experience as a swim instructor in a structured learn-to-swim program Experience working with beginner or anxious young swimmers (ages 5-8) Competitive swimming background or equivalent high-level swimming experience Bilingual communication skills (Spanish preferred given community demographics) Schedule Division 1A (Bronze): Tuesday 5:30 PM | Saturday 8:00 AM Division 1B (Bronze): Thursday 6:00 PM | Saturday 8:30 AM Division 1C (Bronze): Tuesday 6:00 PM | Saturday 9:00 AM Division 2A (Silver): Tuesday 6:30 PM | Saturday 9:30 AM Division 2B (Silver): Thursday 6:30 PM | Saturday 10:30 AM Division 3A (Gold): Tuesday 7:00 PM | Saturday 11:00AM Note:
After-school programming at the facility runs until 5:30 PM. Weekday lesson slots are scheduled accordingly. Non-Negotiables — Every Session Instructor and on-stand lifeguard roles may never be combined No lesson begins without minimum staffing confirmed in place The Lifeguard on Stand focuses solely on pool surveillance—no instructional duties The Sliding Review Protocol is never skipped, shortened, or moved to make up time Swimmers never enter the water without instructor permission How to Apply Interested candidates should submit a current résumé and copies of active certifications to the Boys & Girls Club Aquatics Director.
