JOB PURPOSE
The Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at Howard University plays an integral role in advancing the success, culture, and competitive excellence of the Women's Basketball program. This position supports the head coach in all facets of the program, including player development, recruitment, game preparation, and academic support, while fostering a strong team culture centered on integrity, discipline, and excellence on and off the court. This role also upholds the university's values as a premier HBCU and NCAA Division I member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
NATURE AND SCOPE
Internal Contacts - head women's basketball coach, assistant women's basketball coaches, vice president of athletics External Contacts - assistant women's basketball coaches at MEAC institutions
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Coaching & Player Development Assist in planning and conducting high-level team and individual training sessions. Instruct student-athletes on basketball techniques, strategies, and performance improvement. Maintain a commitment to safety, sportsmanship, and NCAA compliance at all times. Contribute to pre-game, in-game, and post-game coaching responsibilities as assigned. Collaborate on player development plans including off-season workouts, strength and conditioning, and film sessions. Recruitment Identify, evaluate, and cultivate prospective student-athletes who align with Howard's academic standards and competitive goals. Manage recruiting in designated geographic areas or by position group. Build meaningful relationships with recruits, families, high school coaches, and AAU programs. Coordinate on-campus visits and assist with travel, logistics, and recruiting presentations. Student-Athlete Support & Culture Building Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes in coordination with academic support staff. Encourage personal growth and leadership development in student-athletes. Promote a cohesive, positive team culture aligned with Howard's mission and values. Serve as a mentor, advisor, and advocate for student-athletes' holistic well-being. Support adherence to team rules, university policies, and NCAA regulations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree. Prior coaching or playing experience at the collegiate or professional level. Knowledge of NCAA Division I rules and regulations. Valid driver's license and ability to travel for recruiting and competitions. CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain).
SALARY RANGE DISCLOSURE
