Job Description

The Defensive Coordinator i s responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all aspects of the football program's defensive unit. This includes designing defensive strategies, managing defensive coaching staff, and ensuring student-athletes are prepared for competition. The Defensive Coordinator works collaboratively with the Head Coach and staff to implement effective game plans and maintain a high-performing defensive unit throughout the season while supporting the academic success, personal development, and overall well-being of student-athletes.
Essential Functions:
Collaborate with the Head Coach and offensive staff to ensure a balanced and cohesive team strategy. Design and implement defensive schemes, including alignments, coverage packages, blitz concepts, and run defense strategies. Make real-time in-game adjustments based on opponent strategy, player performance, and game flow. Provide individual and group instruction to defensive student-athletes on technique, fundamentals, and concepts. Identify areas for player development and implement strategies to enhance performance. Foster a culture of discipline, accountability, and mental toughness within the defensive unit. Analyze opponent film and tendencies to develop detailed defensive game plans. Lead the defensive staff in preparation for all game situations and ensure clarity of player roles Assist with recruiting efforts, including scouting, evaluating, and identifying defensive prospects (high school, junior college, and transfer portal). Support and coordinate recruiting activities, including maintaining recruiting databases and assisting with official and unofficial visits. Communicate regularly with the Head Coach regarding performance, strategy, and adjustments. Supervise and evaluate defensive coaching staff to ensure effective execution of responsibilities. Monitor and provide feedback on student-athlete performance and development. Make tactical decisions regarding substitutions, formations, and defensive schemes during competition. Ensure compliance with NAIA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations. Support the academic success and holistic development of student-athletes in alignment with departmental goals. Perform all other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of defensive football strategies, schemes, and situational play. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to analyze game film and opponent tendencies effectively. Demonstrated ability to lead and develop coaching staff. Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. Strong recruiting and talent evaluation skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Physical ability to perform duties, including standing and/or walking for extended periods and lifting up to 50 pounds. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Physical Education, or a related field required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous coaching experience, preferably at the collegiate or professional level, with emphasis on defensive unit development. Demonstrated experience in recruiting and student-athlete development.
