Google Chrome, Safari Description Under general supervision of the Surgical Skills Center Medical Director, this position provides leadership, support and is responsible for administrative oversight of the Center, supervision of the Surgical Skills Center Specialists and the Surgical Skills Center Office Support Specialist. The Skills Coordinator maintains oversight of the curriculum and in conjunction with faculty develops new educational endeavors for the skills center. This position also serves as a Surgical Skills Coach for instructing, coaching, supervising and evaluating surgical residents, non-surgical residents, nursing staff, medical students, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and other Allied Health Care Professionals. This position will also administer and supervise the newly developing capacity for 3D printing that will be part of the surgical skills center in the near future.

Coordinates annual budget planning B. Administratively oversees all activities of the Center C. Serves as the primary Center contact within SIU School of Medicine and beyond to external partners. D. Serves as the primary liaison with SIU Public Affairs and the Memorial Center for Learning & Innovation (MCLI) in scheduling tours, visits, and other public relations activities. E. Procures and applies for grant money and donations of surgical skills supplies, equipment and other needed materials for the Center. F. Provides administrative oversight for institutionally-approved industry sponsored revenue activities and special sessions. G. Provides oversight of the Verification of Proficiency Program for residents. H. Provides administrative oversight for scheduling, evaluation and delivery of all resident curriculums and skills center activities. I. Assists with faculty assignments for various curriculum modules. J. Maintains a record of equipment repairs and model durability for budgeting of equipment and models. K. Develops new relationships and provides consultation to external groups seeking to develop new programs or enhance existing programs. L. Provides faculty development for users of the skills center and the skills center staff. M. Oversees the orientation of new employees in the skills center. N. Makes recommendations to the Surgical Skills Medical Director for hiring/termination, salary decisions, and disciplinary action for an employee. O. Develops policies regarding new operational functions. P. Supervise the Surgical Skills Center journey towards accreditation from the Accredited Education Institute (AEI) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and then maintain accreditation. Q. Provide guidance and assistance to the MCLI Simulation Executive Steering Committee as they pursue Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) Accreditation. R. Supervises and instructs surgical skills center specialist in the development of new 3D printing capacity. Teaching 20% A. Provides feedback and evaluation during surgical skills laboratory modules. B. Provides teaching for skills modules for non-surgical housestaff, medical students, and nurses, Physicians Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Allied Health Care Professionals. C. Designs and teaches special practice sessions to provide residents for deliberate practice experiences subsequent to formal laboratory modules. D. Provides feedback and evaluation to housestaff for the proficiency processes. E. Assists faculty in the development and implementation of prescribed remediation programs for residents experiencing technical skills difficulties. F. Serves as needed as an evaluator for the Verification of Proficiency (VOP) evaluations. G. Serves as a liaison for Memorial Medical Center to verify surgical expertise for all SIU Surgical Nurse Practitioners and SIU Surgical Physician Assistants. H. Provides coaching of residents in technical skills during their early experiences in the operation room. I. Works with faculty in the development of new curriculum modules. J. Manages ongoing evaluation of all curriculum modules and assists with identifying new areas for development of curriculum modules. K. Assists with the development and creation of models for use in curriculum modules. L. Screens and selects new materials for a multimedia library of reference materials, equipment and models for improvement of the education for the Center. Research 10% A. Represents the Center at Surgical Education Research Group and SIU Outcomes & Analytical Research (SOAR) meetings. B. Supports and assists with the implementation of research protocols and data to support education research. Service 10% C. Represents the Center at local, state, and national meetings. D. Serves on Center, departmental, or institutional committees as needed. E. Assists in development and delivery of programs to the local community. F. Maintains professional growth and development through continuing education, workshops and professional affiliations. G. Serves as a liaison for both hospitals in many production aspects. Clinical 10% A. Under direct supervision of a surgeon, assists department surgeons to carry out a safe operation as a surgical assistant. This experience maintains her knowledge and expertise in surgical procedures, equipment, and the operating room environment. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications 1) One of the following: a. Bachelor's degree with a major in nursing, surgical technology or a related science or health science field and at least five (5) years of work experience in an operating room environment; or b. Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist from an AST approved Surgical First Assisting program and at least five (5) years of work experience in an operating room environment. 2) Demonstrated knowledge and practice of basic patient care concepts; application of the principle of asepsis; basic surgical case preparation skills; ability to perform the role of first assistant on basic surgical cases. 3) Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations. Desirable Qualifications 1) 3 years of experience in education.
