POSITION PURPOSE
The Head Coach is responsible for ensuring all student-athletes acquire knowledge and apply skills
  • enhancing tomorrow's opportunities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Administrative Responsibilities Develops a transformational coaching statement which is clearly communicated to staff, team members and parents. Supports GHS athletics vision and values statement (Refer to the Athletic Handbook). Works with other coaches to support multi-sport athletes. Works with the Athletic Director for all matters relating to the organization, administration and philosophy of the sport under his/her direction. Serves in a leadership capacity to the community program. Oversees the high school program in his/her sport and supports the middle school and elementary programs. Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved. Maintains competency in IHSAA rules, event procedures, coaching techniques and general information about all aspects of the sport. Is a member of the state coaching association that honors Academic All-state student athletes Recommends teams that may be scheduled to the Athletic Director. Works closely with the Athletic Director to schedule facility use. Works with the coaches and/or Athletic Director to plan transportation and appropriate supervision at away contests in compliance with the corporation travel policy and guidelines. Models sportsmanship-like behavior and maintains appropriate conducts toward players, officials and fans. Attends all Head Coaches meetings. Supervisory Duties Assists the Athletic Director in recruiting and hiring all coaches. Evaluates all assistant coaches in his/her sport. Assigns duties to coaching staff. Supports and promotes leadership programs and participates when applicable. Record Keeping Responsibilities Maintains an accurate and current team & program roster and submits copies to the Athletic Office. Works closely with the Athletic Director in the financing of his/her sport by preparing and submitting an annual budget; follows school board policies regarding setting funding criteria and handling financial transactions and sets parameters. Supervises fundraising efforts for all teams under his/her direction and submits proper forms as required by board policy. Submits annually expense reports for youth leagues and camps and an elementary sport summary. Maintains sport webpage and keeps it up to date. Develops a consistent and positive communications procedure through the school and media to inform the parents and the general public about his/her sport. Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season. Arranges for the presentation of team awards through the Athletic Office. Submits annually inventory list. Athletic Behavior/Eligibility Responsibilities Enforces all rules of the IHSAA related to his/her sport. Enforces discipline and sportsmanship-like behavior at all times and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students. Ensures that no bullying/hazing occurs in his/her sport. Establishes performance criteria for participation in interscholastic competition in his/her sport. Checks with Athletic Office on individual athlete's eligibility. Injury/Safety Cooperates with the Athletic Director to verify that no participant is issued equipment or allowed to practice until his/her physical examination card has been completed. Oversees the safety condition of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present. Enforces rules and regulations concerning conditioning of players and their health and safety. Reports injuries to the athletic trainer through personal communication, as well as completing and submitting incident reports to the athletic trainer and Athletic Office. Exercises great care in dealing with all injuries and particularly those that are of a serious nature. In all cases, the coach should assure that the injured athlete receiving competent medical care. Following injuries of a serious or prolonged nature, the coach should secure the signed approval of the doctor and parent before the athlete is allowed to participate again in athletic activities. Provides supervision of all athletes until they have left the building and/or site. Ensures that all windows, doors, and gates are locked in any area that has been used. Team Activities Plans all practice sessions and competitions and supervises out-of-season conditioning program. Ensures a positive environment free of hazing, harassment, bullying and intimidating language and behaviors. Plans and executes special events such as assemblies, Senior/Parent Night, team meals, awards banquet, other special recognition, etc. Other duties Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 21 years of age Possess a high school diploma or equivalent IHSAA required coaching classes and CPR Preference given to GCS employees
QUALIFICATIONS
Player experience Middle School or High School coaching experience preferred Experience in teaching, coaching, and sports medicine preferred. Strong communication, motivational and organization skills. Team building abilities and working in a collaborative environment are essential for a Head Coach. Demonstrate success in area of application.
