Job Description

Position Description:
Valparaiso University invites applications for an Assistant Track and Field Coach specializing in the throws. This coach will be responsible for the development of student-athletes competing in the shot put, discus, hammer throw, and javelin. The position includes practice planning, technical instruction, recruiting, equipment and facility management and assisting with team operations. The ideal candidate is committed to building a competitive, supportive, and academically focused team environment.
Major Responsibilities:
Develop and implement annual training plans for the shot put, discus, hammer throw and javelin.
  • Provide individualized technical instruction and event-specific strength and conditioning guidance to throwers.
  • Plan and supervise daily practices while monitoring athlete development and performance.
  • Recruit qualified student-athletes who can succeed both athletically and academically.
  • Manage the throws equipment inventory and assist with the maintenance, organization and safety of throwing facilities.
  • Assist with meet management, travel and other team operations as assigned.
  • Promote academic achievement, personal development and a positive team culture among student-athletes.
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with NCAA, Missouri Valley Conference and University policies.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Master's degree. Previous collegiate coaching experience. Experience coaching all four throwing events (shot put, discus, hammer throw, and javelin). Demonstrated success in recruiting and developing collegiate throwers.
Other Qualifications:
Coaching or competitive experience in the throwing events. Excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills. Ability to work collaboratively with other event coaches and staff. CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain). All offers of employment with Valparaiso University are contingent upon the clear results of a thorough background check.
