Job Description

Cardinal Spellman High School Varsity Co-Ed Swim Coach Position Overview

Cardinal Spellman High School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Varsity Co-Ed Swim Coach to lead and develop our student-athletes through a competitive, inclusive, and mission-driven swimming program. The Varsity Swim Coach is responsible for the overall leadership of the team, including athlete development, practice planning, meet preparation, team culture, communication, and adherence to Cardinal Spellman High School, MIAA, and league policies.

The ideal candidate will be committed to developing the whole student-athlete, fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, sportsmanship, accountability, and respect while supporting the Catholic mission and values of Cardinal Spellman High School.

Essential Responsibilities

Coaching & Athlete Development

Plan and lead organized, purposeful, and age-appropriate practices that develop technical swimming skills, endurance, strength, conditioning, and race strategy.

Develop individualized and team-based goals for student-athletes and monitor progress throughout the season.

Teach and reinforce proper swimming techniques, starts, turns, finishes, and competitive strategies.

Prepare athletes for dual meets, invitational meets, league competition, and postseason competition.

Make thoughtful decisions regarding event assignments, relays, lineups, and meet strategy.

Team Culture & Student Formation

Establish a positive team culture rooted in family, leadership, authenticity, grit, service, heart, integrity, and passion.

Model and reinforce good sportsmanship, respect, accountability, discipline, and appropriate conduct.

Support the development of young men and women of faith who understand that athletics is an opportunity for character formation, community, and service.

Address team conflicts, behavioral concerns, and performance challenges promptly and appropriately in collaboration with the Athletic Department and school administration when necessary.

Safety & Supervision

Maintain a safe and appropriately supervised pool environment at all times.

Follow all school, facility, league, MIAA, and applicable safety requirements.

Understand and implement appropriate emergency procedures.

Monitor student-athlete health, hydration, conditioning, and overall safety.

Report injuries, safety concerns, or other significant incidents promptly to the Athletic Department.

Ensure that all required athletic policies, forms, certifications, and eligibility requirements are followed.

Communication & Collaboration

Communicate consistently and professionally with student-athletes, families, school administration, athletic staff, officials, and facility personnel.

Maintain timely communication regarding schedules, practices, meets, transportation, expectations, and other important team information.

Collaborate with the Athletic Director and other coaches to support the overall student-athlete experience at Cardinal Spellman.

Attend required coaches' meetings, professional development, and school athletic events.

Support the broader mission and culture of Cardinal Spellman Athletics beyond the swim season.

Administrative Responsibilities

Maintain accurate team rosters, attendance, meet entries, results, and other required records.

Assist with scheduling practices, meets, and competitions in coordination with the Athletic Department.

Ensure compliance with all applicable MIAA, league, school, and facility regulations.

Manage team equipment and communicate maintenance or replacement needs to the Athletic Department.

Complete all required coaching certifications, training, and background checks.

Submit required paperwork and information to the Athletic Department in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Previous competitive swimming and/or coaching experience required.

High school, club, collegiate, or comparable coaching experience preferred.

Strong knowledge of competitive swimming techniques, training principles, and meet procedures.

Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain required certifications.

Ability to effectively lead and motivate high school student-athletes.

Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Demonstrated commitment to sportsmanship, student development, and team culture.

Ability to work collaboratively with the Athletic Department, school administration, families, and other coaches.

Commitment to supporting the Catholic mission and values of Cardinal Spellman High School.

Time Commitment

This is a seasonal coaching position requiring availability for:

Preseason planning and required meetings

Regular weekday practices

Scheduled home and away meets

League and postseason competitions as applicable

Team events and activities

Required athletic department meetings and professional development

Cardinal Spellman Athletics seeks to provide a vibrant student experience through excellence, service, inclusiveness, and engagement. $4,000 to $7,500 Stipend
