Job Description

Under the supervision of the Director of Athletics, the Head Volleyball Coach will be responsible for the overall management and supervision of the volleyball program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: recruitment, development, and retention of student-athletes; budget management; scheduling; fundraising; academic monitoring; and supervision and evaluation of student-athletes and assistant coaches. The head volleyball coach will be responsible for cultivating highly competitive programs within the CIAA, NCAA and Johnson C. Smith University's policies, procedures, and expectations. In addition, the Head Women's Volleyball Coach will also be responsible for serving as the Assistant Softball Coach. Under the supervision of the Head Softball Coach, this position will be responsible for all sides of the program including organization, development, and leadership of a highly competitive Division II softball program in support of the mission and core values of Johnson C. Smith University.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • The Head Women's Volleyball Coach will manage and supervise the volleyball program.
  • Recruits and maintains specific roster sizes for the volleyball program.
  • The individual will be responsible for assigning duties and responsibilities to assistant coaches.
  • Monitors, assists, and nurtures student-athletes' academic progress toward graduation at the college and assists with placement at four-year colleges and universities.
  • Coordinating the issuance, care and inventory of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  • Purchasing equipment, supplies and uniforms.
  • Developing the annual budget.
  • Schedule volleyball matches.
  • Supervise athletes at all times from the time practice or activity starts until it is over.
  • Coordinate the security of all facilities used by the team and coaching staff.
  • Submit certified rosters, award forms, season records, inventory forms, transportations requests, travel authorization requests, travel expense reports, requisitions and other forms required by the Athletic Director.
  • Ensure the proper completion of physical examination forms relating to the examinations and coordinate injuries with the training staff.
  • Coordinate the distribution, collection, and storage of athletic uniforms.
  • Attend athletic department meetings.
  • Show respect for officials, press, opposing coaches, visiting teams, parents, fans, students, athletes, fellow coaches, faculty, and staff.
  • Conduct and handle recruitment of athletes.
  • Be responsible for awards presentations at awards programs.
  • Prepare check requests for game guarantees, team travel, reimbursements, and payments, and route them for appropriate signatures.
  • Prepare purchase requisitions and procurement card purchase requests; purchase supplies and equipment; process invoices and route them for appropriate approval and signatures.
  • Reconcile monthly volleyball expenses and travel.
  • Process official and unofficial visit reports and team post-trip summaries.
  • Prepare and process travel requests for the team; reserve transportation and rental cars; and prepare and process travel reimbursement paperwork for team travel and events.
  • Provide event support for the volleyball team, including pre-event logistics and setup, event support, and post-event cleanup and evaluation. Engage with donors, alumni, and the public at events. Assist with external communication, including mailings, electronic communication, and phone campaigns.
  • Position requires frequent contact with staff, faculty, and students at all levels of the University.
  • Supervise assistant coaches and work-study students.
  • Help instruct players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Organize and direct individual and small group practices and exercises as directed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and adhere to all college, NCAA, and conference rules and regulations.
  • Assist with recruitment of qualified student-athletes.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching and coaching methods along with excellent leadership skills.
  • Assist with game and practice preparation and planning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requires a Bachelor's degree in sports, or a related field. Must demonstrate, intermediate to advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Teams, Excel, and word. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also required. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds is an essential skill. Must be able to prioritize work to meet multiple deadlines with minimal supervision. Familiarity with NCAA Compliance Assistant, Front Rush, or related system is preferred. Additional desirable qualifications include a Master's degree; three years of experience working with college-age athletes; three years of experience with NCAA and CIAA policies and procedures; three years of experience recruiting collegiate athletes at the NCAA level; and demonstrated ability to recruit student-athletes with the potential for both academic and athletic success.
