GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Johnson C. Smith University seeks an assistant women's flag football coach to support the head coach in all facets of a CIAA varsity women's flag football program. JCSU is a charter participant in CIAA women's flag football, which launched in spring 2025 and becomes a full varsity conference sport in 2026-27, and the University's Irwin Belk Complex has hosted the CIAA Women's Flag Football Championship. The assistant coach will help build a competitive, academically focused program through on-field coaching, recruiting, student-athlete development, and day-to-day program operations, in full compliance with NCAA Division II, CIAA, and university rules and regulations.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the Head Coach in planning and conducting practices, strength and conditioning sessions, team meetings, and film study. Assume primary coaching responsibility for an assigned unit (offense, defense, or position group) in the 7-on-7 format. Contribute to game planning, opponent scouting, and in-game strategy; coach from the sideline during all contests, including the CIAA Championship tournament. Teach and reinforce flag football fundamentals and advanced concepts: route concepts, quarterback play, coverage schemes, rush technique, flag pulling, and special situations. Break down game and practice film and deliver feedback to individual student-athletes. Identify, evaluate, and recruit academically qualified prospective student-athletes from high school girls' flag football programs, club/NFL FLAG teams, and transfers, consistent with NCAA and CIAA recruiting rules. Assist with campus visits, prospect correspondence, and the maintenance of recruiting databases. Support skills clinics, prospect camps, and community outreach that grow the recruiting pipeline for the program. Monitor academic progress in coordination with the head coach, athletic academic support staff, and faculty; support class attendance, study hall, and eligibility. Mentor student-athletes and promote personal growth, leadership, and community engagement consistent with the university's mission. Foster a positive, inclusive team culture that emphasizes accountability, respect, and competitive excellence. Know, adhere to, and enforce all NCAA Division II, CIAA, and Johnson C. Smith University rules, policies, and procedures, including Title IX and student-athlete welfare requirements. Complete the annual NCAA coaches certification exam and all required compliance education. Report any known or suspected violations immediately to the Head Coach and Compliance Office. Assist with practice and game-day logistics, team travel, scheduling, and budget tracking. Maintain inventory of uniforms and equipment (flags, belts, balls, field markers) and coordinate with the equipment and facilities staff. Participate in fundraising, alumni, and community events on behalf of the program and the Department of Athletics. Assist with program communications, social media, and promotion in coordination with Athletic Communications. Perform other duties as assigned by the head coach or director of athletics.
