The World School, the Avenues Athletics Department is a group of committed coaches who develop, plan and implement our growing sports curriculum. We pride ourselves in creating programs within each sport discipline, where Middle and Upper School coaches work closely together to ensure we cover the necessary skills and fulfill the needs of our student athletes.
Positions Available Varsity:
November 2, 2026 through February 20, 2027 Assistant Coach The role of an Avenues coach is to instruct our student-athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary to realize individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must provide a foundation for integrity, pride of accomplishment, sportsmanship, self-discipline, goal setting, teamwork and self-confidence. Head Coaches will (but not limited to): Breakdown and teach the fundamental skills for players at all levels Attend all scheduled games and practices Manage and coordinate practice and game plans Be responsible for handling all administrative duties related to their team Attend all scheduled games and practices Attend all necessary athletic and school meetings and events Assistant Coaches will (but not limited to): Support head coach in promoting the mission of the program Contribute to and/or run practice sessions Gather and record statistical information Attend all scheduled games and practices Attend all necessary athletic and school meetings and events Practice and Game Schedule Practices are 1.5 hours and meets are up to 2 hours, not including travel time. Varsity roles meet 4x a week. On meet days, athletes sometimes leave between 2:15pm - 3:00pm, so candidates should be available at this time to travel to away games with the team. Home meets are at 4:30pm. The practice schedule is as consistent as it can be for each team. They are 1.5 hours and are slotted between 4-6pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Fridays and 2:45-4:15pm (only on Wednesdays). Additional information Please note that this is a part time and seasonal position averaging 4.5-10 hours a week. Coach pay rates range from $60.00-$65.00 per hour, depending on coach level (assistant vs. head) and experience. You must be eligible to work in the United States and be living in New York or surrounding area during the season. About You Coaches bring all or most of the following: Head coaches have 3+ years of Saber/Foil head coach coaching experience Assistant coaches have 1+ years of fencing coaching or related experience Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) Strong organizational skills Ability to work well with student athletes, parents, faculty/staff and the athletics department Current First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to get training before the season commences Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport, with special consideration given to those having experience with the desired age category Enthusiasm, commitment, patience, and a passion for teaching the game are essential to this position Ability to motivate and provide positive leadership to our student athletes by following our school and athletic mission High-level competitive playing experience (preferred)
