Head Sailing Coach

Job Overview The New York Athletic Club located in Pelham Manor, NY is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced Sailing Head Instructor to lead our Junior Sailing Program for the 2026 summer season. This role is ideal for teachers or educators looking for a meaningful and rewarding position during the summer. The Head instructor will oversee daily instruction, ensure a safe and positive learning environment, and help young sailors develop their skills, confidence, and love for being on the water. Children range from ages 6 to 15 years old. Buses come from all over New York City and Pelham to bring children to our program. As the leader of our coaching staff, you will play a key role in shaping the culture of our program-promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, safety, cleanliness and respect for the water while upholding the traditions and values of our club community.

Responsibilities:

Develop and implement a structured, age-appropriate sailing curriculum. Lead daily on-water and land-based coaching sessions, providing clear instruction in boat handling, sailing fundamentals, seamanship, and safety. Supervise and mentor junior instructors and ensure consistent, high-quality teaching across the program. Lead daily meetings with junior instructors Closely monitor sailor progress and provide constructive feedback to support individual skill development. Maintain a strong culture of safety by enforcing club and US Sailing safety standards, conducting daily equipment checks, and ensuring appropriate supervision at all times. Organize or support team building events. Oversee the care, organization, and general maintenance of the club's fleet and sailing equipment, reporting repairs and ensuring proper handling and storage. Foster an inclusive, encouraging, and respectful atmosphere aligned with the expectations of a private family-oriented club environment. Assist with parent communication alongside the Manager of Youth Programs Assist with daily administrative work ie. Attendance, boat arrangements, newsletter creation, and inventory of equipment and uniforms.

Requirements:

Minimum three years of coaching experience in a junior sailing program Minimum one year of lead coaching experience in a junior sailing program Possess a Level 1 Instructor Certification from US Sailing Possess a Safe Powerboat Handling Certification from US Sailing Possess a compliant First Aid/CPR/AED Certification Pass the NYS and national background check Transportation to and from Travers Island required Experience working with children and teens in an instructional, athletic, or educational setting-strong classroom or group-management skills are essential. Ability to design engaging on-water and land-based lessons promoting safety, skill building, and enthusiasm. Strong communication skills with the ability to connect with young sailors, parents, staff, and club leadership. Reliable, professional, and comfortable representing the club to members. Passion for mentoring youth and promoting teamwork, responsibility, and sportsmanship. Regatta experience preferred.
