School Year Functional Purpose:
Working with assistant coaches, the Head Coach - Basketball leads, trains, and motivates student athletes as members of the GMSD boys' basketball team. The basketball coach is responsible for guided instruction in the area of rules, techniques, and tactics to grow student athletes, providing guidance to help the team enhance performance.
Job Functions:
Plans, organizes, directs, and attends all practices and games Develops a sound rapport with students and provides sound leadership; responsible for being an example of good sportsmanship; applies discipline in a fair, positive, and consistent manner according to prescribed procedures; responsible for general health and welfare of students and for the actions and conduct of student athletes; provides students with the skills, tools and knowledge to make healthy life choices on and off the court. Develops sound relationships with athletes, booster clubs, parents, faculty, and community Manages and advises assistant coaches Maintains cooperation with the Principal/Athletic Director and other school personnel; maintains consistent communication with the Athletic Director by keeping AD informed regarding the overall program, including trips, tournaments, games, injuries, etc. Develops a sound system for accountability, upkeep and protection of equipment, and record of inventory. Also follows the process prescribed as it concerns program budget. Completes appropriate paperwork, reports, and makes recommendations for improvement.
Preferred knowledge/skills/abilities:
Experience participating in and/or functioning as a coach/advisor in a particular activity. Knowledge of rules, theory, strategy, and regulations relating to the specific activity, including rules changes and new developments. Skill at providing leadership and developing rapport with students; constructing well organized and efficient practices and matches; communicating verbally and in writing; supervising students and school areas; and teaching good sportsmanship Additional notes: Depending on the activity, applicants must be willing and able to work on weekends and at various times of the day
Compensation:
This is a GMEA-contracted position and compensation is based on the 2026-2027 GMEA contract and amount listed. Must complete and submit all six (6) required GMSD clearances and TB test before starting. The position above will remain posted for a minimum of seven days.
