To Be Determined Job Description General Description The goal of the Head Coach is to instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the student shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of personal values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, leadership, and self-confidence. In conjunction with the Athletic Director and respective Principals, the Head Coach supervises a staff of High School Assistant Coaches and assists in overseeing and developing coaches at the junior high and middle school levels. The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire school district. Public exposure is a considerable responsibility, and community and parent expectations for competitive success must never override the objectives of sportsmanship, student development, safety, and positive mental health. The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time commitments, risk of injury, and due process responsibilities associated with interscholastic athletics. Duties and Responsibilities Program Leadership and Compliance Possesses thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Eastmont School District and Eastmont High School and is responsible for their implementation throughout the basketball program. Maintains knowledge of district, league, WIAA, and state regulations and consistently implements and interprets them for athletes, coaches, and parents. Accompanies and/or attends sufficient contests, activities, and events to provide proper supervision and evaluation of athlete performance. Exercises sound and discretionary judgment relative to the direction of the basketball program at all times. Maintains a balance between academic, social, emotional, and physical development of student-athletes. Demonstrates professional conduct and serves as a positive role model for student-athletes, coaches, and the community. Staff Responsibilities Establishes the fundamental philosophy, culture, skills, and techniques to be taught throughout the basketball program. Designs and conducts staff meetings, clinics, and planning sessions to ensure staff awareness of program expectations and objectives. Trains, mentors, and evaluates assistant coaches and encourages professional growth through clinic attendance and continuing education opportunities. Establishes and coordinates the selection process for all basketball teams. Coordinates duties, responsibilities, and evaluates the performance of each basketball coach in collaboration with the Athletic Director. Maintains discipline, addresses grievances, and works to increase morale, cooperation, and professionalism among coaching staff. Schedules and coordinates team attendance and participation in camps, conferences, clinics, and summer development opportunities. Assists in creating alignment and continuity between middle school, junior high, and high school basketball programs. Organizational, Communication, and Public Relations Duties Schedules, organizes, directs, and supervises practice sessions and team activities. Sends timely information and correspondence to players and parents. Conducts preseason orientation meetings for athletes, parents, and coaching staff. Develops procedures for open communication with athletes and parents using Eastmont School District approved communication methods and technology. Promotes the basketball program within the school and community by encouraging participation and supporting youth basketball development opportunities. Forms and maintains a parent support/advisory group with representation to the Booster Club. Maintains professional relationships with students, parents, staff, officials, and community members. Administrative Duties Distributes team rosters and required documentation to the Athletic Office. Determines and procures team awards and recognition items. Completes all required state association rules examinations, compliance requirements, trainings, and district professional development. Ensures all coaching staff, including themselves, remain compliant with WIAA certification requirements and Eastmont School District requirements. Follows all Eastmont School District athletic eligibility rules and regulations and monitors athlete eligibility throughout the season. Coordinates transportation for out-of-town contests, tournaments, camps, and other team activities. Maintains accurate records related to rosters, eligibility, injuries, inventories, and required reports. Submits all required end-of-season reports and program evaluations within established timelines. Athlete Safety and Supervision Maintains a constant focus on athlete safety and well-being. Files accident reports for all injuries and notifies the Athletic Director in accordance with district procedures. Provides appropriate first aid and follows up regarding the status of injured athletes. Works closely with athletic trainers, medical personnel, and school administrators regarding athlete health and safety concerns. Ensures injured athletes return to participation only when proper medical clearance has been obtained. Maintains proper supervision of athletes during practices, contests, travel, locker room activities, camps, and overnight trips. Is knowledgeable of and adheres to all WIAA safety requirements, concussion protocols, and the 14 Duties of Care for Coaches. Training and Preparation of Athletes Promotes positive sportsmanship, ethical competition, and respect for teammates, opponents, officials, and spectators. Provides appropriate skill development, tactical instruction, conditioning, and positive motivation. Incorporates mental performance, leadership development, and character education into the program. Demonstrates appropriate attention to athlete maturity, readiness, and developmental progression. Utilizes current best practices in conditioning, injury prevention, skill development, and performance enhancement. Encourages academic success and personal responsibility among student-athletes. Finance and Equipment Works with the Athletic Director in the supervision and management of basketball program budgetary accounts. Utilizes sound fiscal management practices in fundraising and expenditures consistent with ASB funding laws and district procedures. Is accountable for all basketball equipment, uniforms, and program assets. Arranges for the issuance, collection, storage, repair, and reconditioning of equipment and uniforms. Maintains accurate annual inventories and current equipment records. Monitors and assigns equipment storage areas and coaches' workspaces as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Previous successful Head Coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of basketball skill development, game strategy, player development, and program leadership. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, administrators, and community members. Commitment to promoting sportsmanship, leadership, citizenship, and positive character development.
