Ballet III/IV (Advanced levels) in the Fall of 2026 and the Spring of 2027 . Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:50-11:20am This course will be taught in person, on campus.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Advanced studio instruction in Ballet and Pointe. The course supplements and refines the ballet skills of the advanced dancer, focusing on technical details, use of the upper body, breath of movement and expression, as well as an increasingly advanced repertory of steps. The SMC dance program is looking at the decolonization of the art form in its entire curriculum and ballet will be viewed in terms of the enculturated body. Ballet has traditionally been taught from the perspective of the caucasian body and its aesthetics come from an eurocentric view. It's important that our diverse body of students get the experience of taking ballet - especially due to the current climate regarding black lives matter and the need for inclusion of BIPOC voices - with a ballet teacher who has a strong understanding of the enculturated body, particularly the body of individuals of African descent. Dance faculty are also required to attend dance faculty meetings and will be compensated for these hours.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have professional training in Ballet and Pointe technique, with expertise in examining the enculturated body within the Ballet form. Undergraduate degree required; master's degree or equivalent professional experience preferred. Applicants must reside in California.
Salary:
$4,964 - $6,872 depending on qualifications. The salary range for this position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here. To apply, visit https://apply.interfolio.com/187662 jeid-7dbb95e6c42edd42a2fc0d506e9ef614
