Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs Job Summary:
This tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics position is centered on excellence in undergraduate teaching, with a strong emphasis on student learning, academic rigor, and success across the mathematics curriculum. The faculty member is expected to teach a broad range of courses, including foundational courses that support progression to calculus, while maintaining high standards and providing meaningful support to students, particularly those who are at risk or academically underprepared. Beyond classroom instruction, the role includes student advisement, mentoring, recruitment, and regular office hours, reflecting a deep commitment to student engagement and achievement. The position also values scholarly development and institutional service. While teaching is the primary focus, candidates with a record of research and publication, especially involving diverse populations, are preferred, and expertise in areas such as data science is viewed as an asset. Faculty are expected to contribute actively to departmental, college, and university service through committee work and participation in campus activities, including commencement. Overall, the role seeks a faculty member who will advance teaching excellence, contribute to the academic community, support student success, and uphold the mission of Bethune-Cookman University. Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) is a historically black college or university (HBCU) that seeks avid scholars dedicated to excellence in teaching and research as well as the continued enhancement of the academic environment for students and colleagues. Founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune in 1904, B-CU is a United Methodist Church-related university offering baccalaureate and master's degrees. Duties/Responsibilities:
Primary duties are classroom instruction of undergraduate mathematics with a commitment to student learning. Course assignments each semester may range from freshman-level liberal arts mathematics to senior-level courses. The full-time teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. Faculty members should expect to be involved in department activities, student advisement, student recruitment, mentoring at-risk and low-level students. Additional duties will include holding weekly office hours and recitations, participating in departmental, college, or university committees/activities, and attending commencement activities. Teaching opportunities during the summer may be available depending on enrollment. Summer assignments are not guaranteed.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in mathematics or applied mathematics. Preference will be given to applicants with areas of specialization that complement existing faculty. Applicants should have a strong commitment to teaching at a liberal arts school. Evidence of successful teaching at the college level is required. Bethune-Cookman University is specifically seeking instructors who are committed to maintaining high academic standards for courses preceding calculus and who have an interest in teaching these courses. Applicants who are available to teach both day and evening courses are preferred. Applicants who have experience with online teaching are preferred. A record of research and publication is preferred, but not essential. Evidence of research with diverse populations is desirable. Experience in Data Science is desirable, but not essential. The candidate must be prepared to affirm and support the Christian and liberal arts mission of Bethune-Cookman University. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required.
