10 month faculty position Notre Dame of Maryland University•School of Education Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU) invites applications for a 10-month, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Literacy Education. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the preparation of future educators through teaching, scholarship, and service within a collaborative and mission-driven School of Education. Position Overview The Assistant/Associate Professor will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy education and contribute to program development, student success, and accreditation efforts. The role includes responsibilities in teaching, scholarship, advising, and service to the university and broader community. Responsibilities Teaching & Instruction Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy education (e.g., reading development, writing instruction, literacy assessment, intervention, content area literacy). Develop and revise curriculum grounded in current research, inclusive pedagogy, and evidence-based literacy practices (e.g., science of reading, structured literacy, and culturally responsive literacy instruction). Prepare teacher candidates to support diverse learners, including multilingual learners, in literacy development across content areas and PK-12 settings. Supervise student research, internships, and field experiences. Maintain regular office hours and provide academic advising. Assist with edTPA preparation and student support, particularly in literacy-focused instructional planning and assessment. Serve as chair or reader on doctoral committees. Scholarship & Professional Development Conduct and disseminate scholarly research in literacy education through publications, presentations, and/or grant activity. Engage in research and innovation related to literacy development, assessment, intervention, or teacher preparation. Engage in continuous professional development to remain current in literacy policy, practice, and research. Contribute to the intellectual life of the School of Education through collaboration and innovation. Program Support Collaborate with faculty to support curriculum development and continuous improvement aligned with state (MSDE) and national standards (CAEP and literacy-related standards such as ILA). Contribute to accreditation efforts, including data collection and reporting related to literacy outcomes. Participate in program assessment and evaluation activities, including analysis of candidate performance in literacy competencies. Student Support & Recruitment Advise students on program pathways, licensure requirements, and careers related to literacy education. Support teacher candidates in developing competencies in literacy instruction across content areas and grade levels. Partner with admissions and advising staff to support student recruitment and retention. Promote a culture of equity, inclusion, and academic excellence. University & Community Engagement Serve on departmental, school, and university committees. Build and maintain partnerships with local schools and districts to support field placements, literacy initiatives, and collaborative programming. Engage in service activities that support the mission of the university and the profession. Qualifications Earned doctorate in Literacy Education, Reading, Curriculum & Instruction (with a literacy focus), or a closely related field. PreK-12 teaching experience required. Strong foundation in literacy research, including the science of reading, alongside the ability to draw on a range of research and evidence-based approaches to support diverse learners. Strong background in evidence-based literacy practices, with attention to explicit instruction, student-centered teaching, student motivation and engagement, and the literacy development of diverse learners. Experience supporting multilingual learners and integrating literacy across content areas. Evidence of successful teaching at the university level (undergraduate and/or graduate). Demonstrated record of scholarship or potential for scholarly productivity in literacy education. Knowledge of state certification/licensure processes and national standards (CAEP and literacy standards such as ILA). Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service. Preferred Qualifications Experience in dyslexia intervention and/or structured literacy approaches. Experience with literacy coaching or instructional leadership. Experience working with adult learners (e.g., graduate students, in-service teachers). Experience supervising field experiences or mentoring teacher candidates. Familiarity with accreditation processes and program assessment. Experience collaborating with schools, districts, or agencies on literacy initiatives.
