All candidates must be eligible to work and live in the U.S. Department Mathematical Sciences - 250500 Working Location (City, State) Boone, NC Position Summary Information Minimum Qualifications A Ph.D. in Math (or a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a closely related field Candidates who are ABD at the time of application will be considered, but a candidate hired without degree in hand by July 1 would be hired at reduced rank and salary. Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required) The Department of Mathematical Science at Appalachian State University invites applications for a nine-month, full-time, non-tenure track appointment (with full benefits) in Math at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor to begin August 2026. We seek a broadly trained mathematician who is passionate about teaching at the undergraduate level. License/Certification Required N/A Description of the Department or Unit The Department of Mathematical Sciences promotes intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and a culture of learning in a supportive environment that encourages faculty to actively engage in teaching, scholarship, and service in the pursuit of student excellence. The department consists of 31 tenured or tenure-track faculty as well as more than 30 full-time and part-time non-tenure-track faculty. The department offers a B.S. degree in actuarial science and in mathematics with a choice of concentrations, including statistics, secondary mathematics education, business, life sciences, physical sciences, and computation. An undergraduate certificate in sports analytics is also available. The department offers an M.A. with concentrations in either college teaching or secondary education. Over the last ten years, the department has graduated 55 undergraduate and 10 graduate majors each year on average. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Teaching Assistant Professor will teach 9 hours of courses per semester in areas of the mathematical sciences and will collaborate in developing and advancing a research agenda with others in the department. Faculty may participate in departmental service that is chosen in consultation with the chair and that supports the Teaching Assistant Professor's professional development goals. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position.
