Assistant or Associate Professor of Chemistry Tenure Status:

Associate Professor Rank:
Applicants must hold a Ph. D. in Chemistry or a related field at the time of application. Five (5) years of experience collegiate and/or university-level teaching. Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required) The Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences invites applications for three tenure-track nine-month faculty positions in chemistry with a start date of August 1, 2027. The department intends to hire at least one candidate at the rank of Assistant Professor and at least one candidate at the rank of Associate Professor. We prefer candidates with a research focus in the areas of biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, chemical education or a combination of these subdisciplines. Candidates must demonstrate a dedication to excellence in teaching, preparedness for establishing a successful research program with undergraduate students, and a strong commitment to service and community engagement. Candidates should highlight in their teaching statement how they can contribute to teaching in one or more of the following chemistry sub-disciplines: analytical chemistry, biochemistry, forensic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry. Candidates should use their research statement to detail their plans for establishing a research program at Appalachian State that will lead to publishing peer-reviewed articles with undergraduate student authors and securing external grant funding. Relevant experience in service and community engagement should also be highlighted in the application materials. License/Certification Required None Description of the Department or Unit Appalachian State University is designated as R2 (High Research Activity) in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences offers multiple concentrations under a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, including American Chemical Society (ACS) Certified degree tracks in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The department also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Fermentation Sciences. The department has 17 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, 20 teaching faculty members, and approximately 350 undergraduate majors. Students are actively engaged in research with department faculty during the academic year (over 100 students) and during summer months (around 40 students). Research students travel to disseminate their work at national, regional, and local professional meetings and in peer-reviewed publications. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Workload duties typically include teaching 3 courses in chemistry (lectures or labs) per semester, maintaining an active scholarship agenda, and participating in service to the Department/University. An active scholarship agenda includes mentoring undergraduate research students, securing external funding, and disseminating results at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. Service to the Department/University includes holding office hours for students, advising majors in the department, serving on committees in the Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences and/or University committees.
