Job Description
Russell Sage College invites applications for a dedicated and student-centered Assistant Professor of Practice in Chemistry to join the Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. The successful candidate will teach introductory lecture and laboratory courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry using evidence-based, inclusive pedagogical practices that support diverse learners. They will be expected to strengthen students' quantitative and scientific reasoning, integrate applied and interdisciplinary examples relevant to health and STEM fields. The candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with colleagues in Nursing, Nutrition Science, and other programs to refine course content and ensure the chemistry curriculum aligns with institutional learning goals. The teaching load will include three distinct foundational courses: (1) an introductory general chemistry course, with an associated laboratory, that serves Nursing, Nutrition, and other health science students and covers essential topics such as chemical calculations, atomic and molecular structure, states of matter, electrochemistry, toxicology, environmental chemistry, nuclear chemistry, and the application of these principles to real-world issues like drug safety, pollution, daily chemical phenomena, and climate change; (2) an introductory organic and biochemistry survey course, also with a laboratory component, that introduces the major classes of organic compounds before moving into core biochemical concepts including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, metabolism, and nucleic acids; and (3) an introductory biochemistry course that provides a deeper exploration of biochemical pathways, focusing on the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids, with emphasis on pathway interconnections and regulatory mechanisms. In addition to these primary teaching responsibilities, the position includes the opportunity to teach an upper-level biochemistry course on a biannual basis. Responsibilities Service Expectations The estimated base academic year salary for this position is $55,000, commensurate with experience.
