The Department of Ophthalmology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for several Assistant Professor positions in either the tenure or non-tenure clinician educator track. Applicants must have an MD, DO, OD, or DVM degree. They may also have a PhD or master's degree but this is not required. They must be licensed to practice medicine in the US, be board eligible or board certified, and be US citizens or permanent residents. The successful candidate must have demonstrated excellent qualifications in research, clinical care, and education. While both tenure and clinician-educator track faculty conduct methodological and collaborative research, tenure track faculty focus primarily on independent, investigator driven research while clinician-educator track faculty focus primarily on collaboration. Research or scholarship responsibilities will include the establishment of wet-lab, patient-oriented, or bioinformatic research supported by the Department's K12 grant with potential for eventual

funding. Clinical responsibilities may include patient care dedicated to the candidates' ophthalmic specialty. Teaching responsibilities may include teaching medical students, residents and fellows. The NIH K12 grant, which has been awarded to Penn's Department of Ophthalmology, enables Department selected Scholars to devote 50-75% of their effort to research. It also provides mentoring and other research resources with the goal of having the Scholar transition to an individual NIH K award (KO8 or K23) within three years and an R01within 6 years. Applicants may pursue clinical practice in vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, glaucoma, cornea, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics, ocular oncology, uveitis, or pediatric ophthalmology. Research mentorship is available in inherited retinal degeneration (IRD), gene therapy, gene editing, transcriptomics, proteomics, big data, biostatistics, glaucoma, metabolism, optic neuropathy, adaptive optics, dry eye, inflammation, AMD, aging, oxidative stress, ROP, and others. Penn's Department of Ophthalmology K12 Program is located in one of NEl's top-funded Departments. The program has been running for 20 years and has facilitated the careers of numerous academic faculty, many of whom have stayed on faculty at Scheie after completing the program. The candidate must be interested in becoming a Scientist-Clinician planning to devote 50% or more of their time to research throughout their career.
