Job Description

  • Background:
  • The Plastic Surgery Department at the University of Virginia is the oldest department in the country with an extraordinary history in craniofacial surgery.
With the support of the institution and strong internal resources, the department has been growing and evolving into a more comprehensive unit. This current position seeks to bolster the current Craniofacial Surgery efforts within the department as well as expand into other offerings. There are opportunities to perform care for patients with cleft lip and palate, orthognathic surgery, craniosynostosis, as well as general pediatric plastic surgery conditions including vascular anomalies and benign lesions. Adult craniofacial surgery would also be a major focus of the position with opportunities for growth in facial trauma, facial femininization, facial and scalp reconstruction, and facial aesthetic surgery including rhinoplasty. An early career applicant is ideal for this position and would be expected to bring new concepts and approaches to the program. Completion of an accredited Plastic Surgery Residency and a Fellowship in Craniofacial Surgery is required.
  • Clinical Care:
  • The new surgeon will contribute to managing current patient volumes and help the existing team build the Adult and Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial surgical services.
A visionary with interests and skills in strategic building, creative thinking and a positive attitude will be well regarded. Participation in multi-disciplinary services related to adult and pediatric craniofacial conditions will be needed and an emphasis on growth and collaboration will be encouraged. A unique advantage of this position is the presence of Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within the department. Building the necessary support system around the program is within our scope in this regard. We have recently hired a pediatric dentist who is building these offerings related to conditions such as cleft lip and palate. There is an ongoing search for a new Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon that can complement the interests and offerings of this craniofacial position hire. Additionally, both the pediatrics and adult CMF programs benefit from dedicated nurse care coordinators. The Department has a robust microsurgical reconstruction program that can support the complex reconstruction needs of the CMF service. Numerous collaborative relationships exist at the institution will aid in programmatic development and expansion including Neurosurgery, Pediatrics and Dermatology. Additionally, opportunities to participate in the Gender Affirmation Surgery program exist.

Outreach:
  • As a member of an academic medical center, it is expected that the new faculty member will grow as an educator, scientist and leader.
Faculty members are encouraged to develop new care pathways, procedures and products that can advance the field. Collaborations are abundant in the basic sciences within the medical school and across UVA grounds. Opportunities exist within the department and School of Medicine for education of both students and residents. Residents that are training at UVA should have opportunities to get advanced education in craniofacial surgery and pursue advanced fellowship at the most well-respected programs. Increasing the department and institution's presence on the regional and national stage will be a priority and will be encouraged. Above all, the new hire and current craniofacial surgeon will work to provide world class care and increase the footprint of UVA Plastic Surgery in the region and beyond.
