As part of the District 209 Teacher Induction Program, teachers new to Proviso are assigned an in-district Educator Mentor to support their transition and success as members of the organization. Educator Mentors are experienced educators and trusted professionals who provide non-evaluative peer support through onboarding, resource sharing, problem-solving, and guidance in navigating district systems, procedures, and professional expectations. Mentors foster professional connections, help teachers access available resources, and contribute to a positive and collaborative school culture. Educator Mentors are committed to supporting the growth and success of their colleagues while also engaging in their own continuous learning and professional growth. They serve as peer colleagues who take a personal and direct interest in the development of new teachers. Educator Mentors do not supervise, evaluate, provide instructional coaching, or perform duties assigned to Department Chairs or administrators. Minimum QualificationsRequired:
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) or CTE License appropriate to assignment.
- Minimum of five (5) years of classroom teaching experience.
- Minimum of three (3) consecutive years of service in District 209.
- Earned a rating of Proficient or Excellent overall and in Domain 4 on the two most recent evaluations.
- No disciplinary action within the previous three (3) school years.
- Strong use of district-approved curricular materials and ed tech platforms
- 90% or better attendance
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience serving as a cooperating teacher.
- Experience mentoring a student teacher, resident teacher, or new teacher.
- Participation on school or district committees.
- Participation in curriculum, instructional framework, or school improvement initiatives.
- Experience facilitating staff orientation, onboarding activities, or employee support programs.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.
- ESL, Bilingual, or LBS1 endorsement. Duties and Responsibilities Onboarding and Induction
- Meet with assigned mentees according to district-established timelines.
- Assist new teachers in understanding district procedures, systems, policies, and deadlines.
- Support mentees in accessing instructional resources, technology tools, and district materials.
- Orient new teachers to building operations and professional expectations. Peer Support
- Serve as a resource for questions regarding district processes and procedures.
- Connect mentees with Department Chairs, administrators, and district staff when specialized support is needed.
- Share organizational strategies and district-approved resources.
- Encourage participation in professional learning opportunities and school activities. Communication and Collaboration
- Maintain regular communication with assigned mentees.
- Participate in mentor training and district mentor meetings.
- Communicate emerging trends and support needs to program coordinators while maintaining professional confidentiality. Program Documentation
- Maintain records of mentor-mentee meetings and activities.
- Submit required documentation by established deadlines.
- Participate in evaluation and continuous improvement of the mentoring program.
Expectations:
- Conduct required mentor-mentee contacts according to district timelines.
- Attend all required mentor training and program meetings.
- Maintain required mentoring documentation.
- Respond to mentee communications within established program expectations.
- Complete all assigned mentoring responsibilities by established deadlines.
Scope of Role:
Educator Mentors provide peer support and onboarding assistance. Educator Mentors do not conduct instructional coaching cycles, classroom observations, demonstration lessons, co-teaching, instructional feedback conferences, department professional learning, curriculum oversight, or instructional framework monitoring. These responsibilities are assigned to Department Chairs and administrators.Selection Process:
The selection process for Educator Mentor positions shall be structured, transparent, and aligned to the responsibilities of the role. All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated using consistent criteria and standardized scoring measures. The process may include the following components: Application Screening Applicants will be screened to verify that all minimum qualifications have been met. Candidates may be awarded points for documented preferred qualifications and relevant experiences. Evidence of Experience Review Candidates may be required to submit documentation demonstrating experiences relevant to the Educator Mentor role, which may include:- Cooperating teacher experience
- Mentoring or induction experience
- Committee leadership or participation
- Staff onboarding activities
- School improvement initiatives
- Other experiences aligned to the responsibilities of the position Structured Interview Candidates selected for interviews will be asked a common set of questions focused on:
- Supporting new teachers
- Building professional relationships
- Problem-solving and communication
- Knowledge of district systems and procedures
