SUMMARY:
An Instructional Coach is an outstanding teacher with a deep understanding of students' learning needs and views their cultural and social identities and lived experiences as assets to their educational experiences. The coach is a skilled educator with knowledge of high-leverage instructional practices, brain-based research, assessment practices, and multiple means for differentiating instruction. The Instructional Coach provides support for teachers in the implementation of effective instructional practices to ensure that all students have access to and full benefit from educational experiences that result in high outcomes. This position is designed to increase individual and collective teacher capacity to provide leadership for change. Coaches apply knowledge of adult learning and change theory to increase overall student growth, social-emotional well-being and achievement. Homewood-Flossmoor High School Instructional Coaches teach one class in alignment with their certification. Coaches work specified summer hours per the negotiated agreement.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in identifying, planning, and facilitating professional learning opportunities for teachers for the purpose of improving student achievement.
  • Builds trust and rapport with the entire school for the purpose of establishing credibility.
  • Collaborates with principals, department chairs, and individual teachers for the purpose of implementing effective instructional practices with a focus on co-planning, co-teaching, and modeling. The coach serves a classroom supporter, instructional specialists, data coach, and professional learning facilitator.
  • Communicates purposely and frequently with teachers, principals and others in a variety of ways (e.g., emails, memos, newsletters, websites, study groups, etc.) for the purpose of sharing information.
  • Facilitates conversations with individual teachers, teacher teams, whole staffs, and other groups for the purpose of meeting school and district objectives.
  • Identifies coaching needs, interests, and desires through collaborative conversations with individual teachers, teams, and communities of practice for the purpose of providing appropriate and effective coaching and developing collective teacher efficacy.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g., grades, attendance, anecdotal records, reports, etc.) for the purpose of documenting progress and meeting mandated and/or district requirements.
  • Provides modeling and co-teaching of a variety of proven instructional methods and use of materials and assessments in the classroom setting for the purpose of increasing teacher efficacy.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Professional Educators License (PEL) and appropriate endorsement.
  • Minimum 5 years successful teaching experience required.
  • Master's Degree in teaching, curriculum, and instruction or related field (preferred).
