The Lower School Curriculum Coordinator provides administrative and strategic oversight in developing, achieving, and maintaining the best educational programs and services for students. Working under the direction of and in conjunction with the Head of Lower School (and their designees), this role is central to the evolution of programs and faculty development and examining the School's curricular programming, alignment, curriculum renewal, and excellence in instruction. The Curriculum Coordinator ensures the program oversight and instructional coaching that aligns with the School's mission and culture to ensure students are authentically and rigorously challenged.
Essential Job Functions:
Program Oversight Oversee and assure the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive, integrated curriculum across all grade levels (PK-Class 5) Analyze data from assessments to monitor student growth and assist in the review of curriculum Provide structure for measurement and evaluation of the curriculum across subject areas Monitor and interpret the latest research, trends, and development in education Stay up to date on current conversations and evolving best practices in curriculum and pedagogy, serving as a thought leader, and advocating for change while being mindful of the day-to-day realities of faculty and the value of important school traditions Cultivate consistency among staff in enforcing the school-wide objectives and policies Ensure the necessary time, resources, materials, and technology to support educational goals are available Instructional Coaching Oversee professional growth, development, and evaluation of teaching faculty Develop an awareness of faculty practices, classroom culture, and effectiveness by conducting informal and formal classroom observations Help teachers strengthen their teaching skills and find/develop imaginative ways to deliver planned curriculum Coach teachers in a variety of instructional strategies Give professional feedback to teachers General Job Expectations Coordinate timely and ongoing communication and feedback to faculty and parents including emails to parents and regular progress reports to parents. Use diverse teaching methods to reach all learners and inspire creativity, self-expression, and appreciation for the grade-level curriculum Collaborate closely with colleagues, administrators, and families to support student success and ensure cohesive cross-curricular learning. Implement effective assessment tools to evaluate, record, and report on student progress Demonstrate a commitment to training and professional development to remain current with educational standards, emerging technology, classroom resources, and pedagogy Engage actively in meetings (grade-level, divisional, School-wide), professional development, and school events Maintain accurate records of student performance and report progress as required Maintain a safe and organized classroom and learning environment, ensuring proper care of equipment, supplies, and resources Occasional extended hours, including after school, evenings, and weekends may be required Perform other duties, as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Literacy, Elementary Education, or a related discipline preferred 5+ years of successful elementary or lower school teaching experience (PreK-Class 5) Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and evaluating curriculum Experience using student assessment data to inform instruction Strong knowledge of child development and best practices in elementary education Effective interpersonal, time management, and communication skills (oral, written, non-verbal) Proficiency in relevant educational technology and software Commitment to fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment and workplace Ability to work effectively as both a team player and individual contributor to foster and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents Understand the academic, social, and developmental needs of elementary-aged students Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities and assignments
Requirements:
This job requires one to lift, carry, push, and/or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds as well as the ability to stand, sit, walk, and effective use of extremities to reach, hold, touch, push, pull, lift, and carry. Incumbent must also effectively communicate (oral, written, non-verbal) with others. This job typically requires 30% sitting, 33% walking, and 37% standing and is performed under minimal temperature variations in a generally hazard free environment. Depending on classroom assignment, this role may require one to relocate classrooms throughout the day and require ascending and descending stairs. Incumbents will occasionally be required to work extended hours, including after school, during evenings, and on weekends. Dexter Southfield's 36-acre campus is composed of several buildings, playing fields, and outdoor learning spaces, which are accessible via internal and external walkways, stairs, nature paths, hills, and uneven terrain. This position requires one to transfer between these areas in all weather conditions.
