Background on MLKCSE
Martin Luther King, Jr. Charter School of Excellence (MLKCSE) is a stand-alone free and public charter school serving 370 students in grades K through 5 in Springfield, Massachusetts. MLKCSE was founded in 2006 and is dedicated to fighting the opportunity gap in Western MA. We are committed to providing each and every one of our students with the quality education they deserve.
MLKCSE is a Title I school. Our MLKCSE students are 34.7% African American and 58.3% Hispanic. 100% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. 24.2% of our students are Emerging Bilingual students and 18.8% of our students have special needs.
Our school is meeting or exceeding targets for most (93%) accountability measures. Overall, our school performs better than 60% of elementary and middle schools statewide at the 61st percentile. MLKCSE is ranked one of the six charter schools in Massachusetts to be meeting more than 75% of the criterion-reference targets. MLKCSE ranked as the 4th highest charter school in the State for our math performance.
The Role
Instructional Specialists who flourish at MLKCSE are lifelong learners, leaders, problem-solvers and are reflective and optimistic. They have deep subject matter knowledge in their respective content, a comprehensive understanding of the Common Core State Standards and shifts, sound insight about child and adolescent development, and a clear vision for high quality planning and instruction. Instructional Specialists are assigned a specific content and grade levels to support (Literacy, Math, Humanities, and Science).
Instructional Specialists at MLKCSE are disciplined and organized. They have a strong work ethic, are dependable, and are a team player. MLKCSE is an environment for educational professionals who enjoy thinking deeply and intentionally about high quality instruction, how to best meet the needs of our diverse learners, and who proactively collaborate with colleagues to support our students in getting better and faster.
Specific Responsibilities
Uphold our school's values, school-wide key systems, and accountability systems for academics and character
Provide consistent and high academic and behavioral expectations
Communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally with students, colleagues and families
Participate in required collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, meetings, professional development, and school-wide functions; help facilitate some professional development opportunities upon request
Engage in coaching and feedback cycles with instructional leaders and implement feedback to improve practice
Collaborate, co-plan, and discuss data with Special Educators, ESL Educators, other Instructional Specialists, and Instructional
Leaders to ensure students receive the necessary targeted interventions and support
Lead professional conversations to foster a common understanding of performance standards in their assigned content area
Identify students in partnership with academic Directors and Principal who are not meeting benchmarks and plan appropriate interventions
Collaborate with grade level team members to write student-specific goals and develop Specialists' caseload and schedule
The Instructional Specialist, classroom teacher, and content specific Academic Director collaboratively decide when students should enter and exit intervention with the Instructional Specialist. The classroom teacher prioritizes students who need specialized and targeted help that they cannot deliver in the classroom for intervention with an Instructional Specialist.
Share ownership and responsibility for the development or revision of curricular materials and teacher's instructional techniques to strengthen the quality of instruction
Model for and coach teachers in order to strengthen their instructional practice
Administer assessments, record and review data, and work with teachers and staff to address findings
Assist classroom teacher in providing accommodations for students
Participate in regular interim data meetings with teachers and instructional leadership and participate in planning and reteaching
Provide resources and ideas for adapting instruction for re-teaching
Support classroom teachers' efforts to address all students' needs by delivering purposeful academic research-based interventions to small groups and in some cases one-on-one targeted intervention and support to students
Plan lessons for intervention groups that are aligned to their specific goals
Collect, analyze and report ongoing data on students receiving intervention services
Consistently meet our school expectations for professionalism and fulfill required responsibilities in a timely and professional manner
Fulfill other duties as assigned

Requirements
Bachelor's degree or higher
Master's degree in elementary or secondary education preferred
Must have completed and passed required MTEL(s) by the end of their first year with MLKCSE or have MA teachers licensure
SEI endorsement by the end of their first year with MLKCSE
Minimum of three years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher (excluding student teaching, practicum, or international teaching experience) preferred
Bilingual Spanish highly desirable

This position is full-time and reports to the Principal.
